SW Christian tops New Ulm 4-2

NEW ULM — Southwest Christian scored three unanswered goals to erase a 2-1 New Ulm lead and went on to top the Eagles 4-2 Friday night in nonconference boys’ hockey.

Brody Hardacre scored two goals for the Stars (9-8-2).

Cade Bushard and Ethan O’Connor scored goals for New Ulm (12-6-1).

Keagan Schiro had two assists with Teddy Giefer adding a helper.

New Ulm netminder Kyle Esser stopped 36 of 40 Southwest Christian shots.

For the Eagles and head coach Ryan Neuman, the non-conference loss to the Stars may be a carrryover from Thursday’s 4-3 sectional loss to Hutchinson.

“That was an emotional loss for us,” Neuman said. “We did address that and we need to show up ready to go.”

Both teams exchanged goals in the first period with the Stars getting on the board first when Jeremiah Kunkel’s shot from the slot just inside the blue line found its way past Esser at the 2:07 mark.

But the Eagles, who play at Windom Monday in a Big South Conference game, tied it at the 13:51 mark on Cade Bushard’s 12th goal of the season.

While the first 17 minutes were relatively penalty-free, that could not be said for the next two periods.

A combined total of 16 penalties were called on the Eagles and the Stars in the last two periods — nine on each team — that led to each team getting a power-play goal in the game.

New Ulm’s Ethan O’Connor’s power-play goal at the 8:58 mark of the second period lifted the Eagles to a 2-1 lead.

And because of the penalties the game bogged down for both teams.

“The game had zero flow to it with all of the penalties,” Neuman said. “That took away from what we could do in a five-on-five situation. When you are constantly shorthanded or on power plays there is no flow to the game.”

The Stars tied the game at 2-2 when both teams were a man short on a Nic Gustafson goal at the 12:52 mark.

Brody Hardacre’s power play goal on a five-on-three advantage gave Southwest Christian a 3-2 lead after two periods.

“They were ticky-tacky calls for both teams,” Neuman said.

Hardacre’s second goal of the game at the 9:15 mark of the third period gave the Stars an insurance goal and a 4-2 lead.

New Ulm pulled Esser for an extra attacker with 1:37 left in the game but could not score.
