Chargers top Cathedral

NEW ULM — Minnesota Valley Lutheran earned its eighth victory of season with a 71-43 win over New Ulm Cathedral in Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball action.

Jenna Hotovec hit a early 3-pointer to give Cathedral a 10-5 lead. Abbie Riederer hit two straight 3-pointers to regain MVL’s lead. Maggie Fliszar’s basket gave the Greyhounds their final lead of the game at 13-12 with 11:42 left in the half.

Riederer hit two baskets and a 3-point shot to help MVL pull away from Cathedral. Riederer canned two consecutive 3-pointers earlier. The Greyhounds hit a scoring drought and MVL went on a 14-0 run. The score was 43-20 at halftime for MVL.

MVL continued its success in the second half collectively outscoring Cathedral 28-23. MVL used a full-court press for a portion of the game. Later, it later switched to a defense that forced Cathedral to take less-than-perfect shots. The Chargers rebounded well, limiting Cathedral to one shot at the basket.

Emma Nelson hit a free throw, Abby Nelson scored a basket, Riederer scored and another Charger scored on a fastbreak layup to complete a 7-0 run.

Brianna Schumacher hit a 3-point shot and got a basket for Cathedral’s final points.

“We played with good energy, and I’m happy about that,” MVL head coach Rollin Timm said.

Riederer led MVL with 20 points, six steals and four assists. Maddie Pearson added 10 points and Emma Nelson scored 9 points. Abby Nelson added 11 rebounds with five assists, Samantha Dalueg added eight rebounds and Ella Schei had seven rebounds.

Emily Schommer scored 11 points for Cathedral. Lily Franta and Schumacher each had 9 points and Jenna Hotovec scored 7 points.

MVL hosts Springfield on Friday and Cathedral is at Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Friday.
