SLEEPY EYE — River Valley junior Parker Kuehn cruised to first place finishes in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, long jump and anchored the 4×200 boys relay team to a first place finish at the Tomahawk-Valley Conference Track and Field Championship Thursday.
River Valley junior Marley Hewitt won the girls 200 and 400 meter dashes and finished second in the 200 meters.
Mankato Loyola-Cleveland-MCA won the boys varsity meet with 130 points. Following were Wabasso (118), River Valley (105.5), GFW (61), GHEC/T/ML (44), Lester Prairie (43.5) and MCW/BO (22).
Loyola-Cleveland-MCA won the girls meet with 176 points. Following were River Valley (130), GFW (81), MCW/BO (50), Wabasso (49), GHEC/T/ML (29) and Lester Prairie (7).
Competitors faced warm, windy weather for the first half of the meet before a lightning strike caused a 30-minute delay. The temperature cooled and the wind nearly completely stopped for the second half of the meet.

“It’s the same for everybody. As long as it doesn’t rain, we’ll be good,” Kuehn said after winning the 100 meters in 11.6 seconds.
It did rain, but only slightly a few times.
Kuehn said his favorite event was the long jump. He jumped 19 feet to win it.
He anchored the River Valley boys 4×200 relay team to first place finish in 1:34.67. His relay teammates were Stan Heiling, McCoy Marti and Mathew Fernandez.
“I feel good. It’s warm enough for muscles to be loose. The only thing is the wind, but it’s fine,” he said.

Hewitt said she tried to keep her head down in the windy conditions early in the meet. She finished second in the 100 meter dash by four-hundredths of a second.
“It was a very close, fun race,” she said. “My favorite race is the 400. It’s the trickiest race but it’s a fun race.”
Hewitt won the 400 meters in 1:00.81. Brynne Ibberson of River Valley finished second.
River Valley Coach Heidi McCone said she felt blessed to have a team led by Kuehn and Hewitt.
“They’re fantastic athletes with real good attitudes. I couldn’t ask for better,” she said. “It’s fun to have those kind of kids on the team that lead by example.”
The GFW 4×100 boys relay team of Regie Mattes, Garrett Stegeman, Brayden Miller and Isaac Bettendorf won in 46:56.
Coach Roger Rogotzke said Miller really ran a great third leg to give GFW a nice lead.
“All the guys had great (baton) handoffs,” he said.
The pole vault event was not held due to winds with gusts up to 40 mph.
The subsection meet begins at 3 p.m., Thursday, May 21 at Sibley East High School in Arlington.
