Area roundup: Cathedral baseball team blasts JWP

PREP BASEBALL

CATHEDRAL 24, JWP 2 (5 INNINGS)

JANESVILLE — New Ulm Cathedral racked up 17 hits on the way to a 24-2 rout of Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton on Friday in a nonconference baseball game.

Ryler Collins got the win in 3 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run on eight hits while striking out three. Evan Blekestad pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief and allowed no walks, hits or runs while striking out two.

Collins helped his own cause at the plate, going 4 for 4 with four RBIs, while Elijah Rieser was 3 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs. Blekestad also was 3 for 4 with a triple and five RBIs, while Alex Portner was 3 for 4 with an RBI and Eli Anderson was 2 for 3 with two walks and three RBIs. Henry Forst and Josh Forstner each had a hit and an RBI also for Cathedral.

Cathedral (14-6) next prepares for the Section 2A playoffs next, which begin Thursday at the high seed.

SLEEPY EYE 10, ST. JAMES 0 (6 INNINGS)

ST. JAMES — Sleepy Eye shut out St. James 10-0 on Friday in a nonconference baseball game.

Sleepy Eye was led by Carson Uecker, who wa 3 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI, while Kayden Klein was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Keeyan Netzke doubled and drove in three runs. Klein also got the win on the mound in six innings of work, allowing five hits and two walks for no runs while striking out four.

Sleepy Eye (16-4) next prepares for the Section 2A playoffs next, which begin Thursday at the high seed.

MAPLE RIVER 4, SIBLEY EAST 3

MAPLETON — Sibley East fell to Maple River 4-3 on Friday in a South Central Conference baseball game.

Tied at three in the bottom of the sixth, Maple River got the go-ahead run on a wild pitch and held on for the win.

Carson Schmidt was 3 for 4 to lead Sibley East at the plate, while Nathan Schauer was 2 for 4. Schmidt also got the no decision on the mound, allowing four hits and three walks for three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out two.

Sibley East (12-7, 7-2) plays the Central Raiders in Norwood Young America on Monday in a nonconference game to end the regular season.

BOYS TENNIS

SHAKOPEE 4, NEW ULM 3

SHAKOPEE — No. 8-seeded New Ulm nearly upset No. 6-seeded Shakopee in the second round of the Section 2AA Boys Tennis Tournament on Friday, falling just short 4-3.

New Ulm got wins at No. 3 and 4 singles and No. 3 doubles.

At No. 3 singles, Isaac Dittmer defeated Kaveen Thilakarathna 7-5, 6-4, while Griffin Lehne defeated Sam Solberg 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. At No. 3 doubles, Hayden Owens and Cole Frederick defeated Henry Terhorst and Harish Babu 4-6, 6-3, 11-9.

New Ulm begins the section individual tourney on Friday at Gustavus Adolphus College.

PREP SOFTBALL

ST. MARY’S 13, BLHS 2 (5 INNINGS)

NORTH MANKATO — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s finished the regular season with a nonconference softball win over Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday night, winning 13-2 at Caswell Park in five innings.

The game ended in five due to the 10-run lead rule.

Taylor Mathiowetz was 3 for 4 with a triple and an RBI to lead St. Mary’s, while Rivers Helget was 2 for 4 and Eva Schweiss was 1 for 2 with a triple, three RBIs and two walks. Natalie Zarn got the win in the circle for the Knights, now 9-10 on the year.

The Knights open the Section 2A playoffs against the Raiders in Nicollet on Tuesday.

BLHS 3, MADELIA 1

NORTH MANKATO — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart topped Madelia 3-1 on Thursday in a nonconference softball game at Caswell Park.

Sadie Kirtz was 2 for 3 with a double, a triple and an RBI to lead BLHS, while Kaylin Torkelson was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Chloe Schultz got the win in the circle, going all seven innings and allowing four hits and two walks for one earned run while striking out three.

Madelia was led by Makayla Sorenson, who was 1 for 2 with a walk, while Emily Jacobs was 1 for 3 with an RBI and Madelyn Lehman was 1 for 3 with a run scored. Jacobs took the loss in the circle in all seven innings, allowing six hits and a walk for three earned runs while striking out seven.

MCW 11, NICOLLET 1 (5 INNINGS)

NORTH MANKATO — Nicollet fell to Martin County West in a nonconference softball game Thursday 11-1 in five innings.

The game ended in five due to the 10-run lead rule.

Zoie Rengstorf had the lone hit of the game for the Raiders, going 1 for 2 with a run scored. Brielle Osborne took the loss in four innings, allowing nine hits and three walks for 10 earned runs.

PREP BASEBALL

LSH 5, MVL 1 (GAME 1)

LSH 12, MVL 2 (GAME 2)

LE SUEUR — Minnesota Valley Lutheran was swept by Le Sueur-Henderson in a South Central Conference baseball doubleheader on Thursday, falling 5-1 in the opener and 12-2 in the second game.

In Game 1 for MVL, Aiden Weisensel and Blake Sexton led the Chargers with a double apiece, while Weisensel added an RBI. Kurt Trahms took the pitching loss in five innings, allowing seven hits and a walk for five runs, one earned, while striking out seven.

In Game 2, Kyan Kube took the loss on the mound in two innings, allowing five runs on six hits and no walks. Connor Bode led the Chargers at the plate, going 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, while Sexton doubled and drove in a run, Jack Parker was 1 for 1 as a pinch hitter and Eli Schauland took three walks and scored a run.

MVL hosts Blue Earth Area at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Johnson Park before traveling to Searles to take on Madelia on Monday afternoon.

MAPLE RIVER 5, SIBLEY EAST 4

GAYLORD — Sibley East lost to Maple River 5-4 on Thursday in a South Central Conference baseball game.

Riley Bussler led the Wolverines at the plate in defeat, going 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI, while Will Feterl had a hit and two RBIs. Nathan Schauer took the pitching loss, going five innings and allowing six hits and a walk for five runs, two earned, while striking out eight.
