Cathedral knocks off CM

NEW ULM ― The New Ulm Cathedral boys’ basketball team continued its winning ways with a 53-41 win over Cedar Mountain on Friday in Tomahawk Conference action.

Chris Knowles led all scorers with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Jon Zinniel scored 17 points and he had 13 rebounds. Sam Knowles had 14 rebounds.

Trey Peterson-Juhl led the Cougars with 11 points and five rebounds, Chris Dow and Caden Kleinschmidt each scored 8 points. Dow had three steals and Kleinschmidt had five rebounds.

CM scored 34 points in the first half, but it scored only 7 points in the second half and shot only 36 percent for the game.

Peterson-Juhl scored for a 36-28 CM lead early in the second half. Cathedral chipped away at the Cougar advantage tying it on a fast break layup by Zinniel with 8 minutes left in the game.

Both teams traded free throws for another tie. James Gillis canned a 3-pointer for a 44-41 Greyhound lead.

Cathedral started to pull away from CM. The Greyhounds used a tenacious defense giving CM only one shot at the basket.

Chris Knowles scored on a layup off a Cathedral steal, making it 49-41. He scored another basket and Zinniel scored Cathedral’s final basket.

Zinniel hit a 3-pointer, Chris Knowles scored and Sam Knowles scored to fuel Cathedral’s 7-0 run early in the first half.

Devonte Charles hit two 3-pointers in a short time span to tie it at 13-13. Dow canned a 3-pointer for CM’s first lead of 16-13. Kleinschmidt scored for a 5-point cushion.

Zinniel hit a 3-pointer and Chris Knowles scored, was fouled and he made the free throw to tie it at 24-24.

Peterson-Juhl’s basket regained the lead for CM. The Cougars finished out the first half with an 8-4 run for a 34-28 halftime advantage.

Cathedral (7-0, 4-0) will participate in the Nicollet Holiday Tournament on Friday. 27.

CM (2-4, 0-3) will play in the Windom Area Tournament on Friday.
