NORTHFIELD — The Martin Luther College volleyball team dropped its match at Carleton 3-1 (20-25, 25-16, 25-9, 25-20).

MLC controlled the first set on the way to a 1-0 lead in the match, but Carleton roared back with 25-16 and 25-9 wins in the second and third sets, respectively.

The Knights came out on fire to start the third set and built an 18-12 lead, but Carleton rallied to win 13 of the final 15 points to win the set and the match.

Kati Aguilar led MLC with nine kills, while Kelsey Birschbach finished with seven kills, three service aces, 14 digs and two blocks.

Kate Aswege tied Birschbach for the team lead with 14 digs. Alyssa Heckendorf finished with a team-best three blocks.

MLC fell to 2-15 on the season in defeat, while Carleton improved to 5-11 with the win.

The Knights will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Northland for a match scheduled to start at 3 p.m.

Men’s golf

BECKER – The MLC men’s golf team finished Day 1 of the UMAC Golf Championships at Pebble Creek Golf Course in fourth place on Thursday.

MLC finished with a team score of 337 strokes, nine strokes behind third-place Northwestern-St. Paul. UW-Superior leads the tournament after day one with a score of 308, followed by St. Scholastica (322) in second place.

Stephen Biebert finished round one in ninth place thanks following a round of 80. That score is eight strokes off the current lead at the event.

Zackary Zuberbier shot a round of 84 to tie for 14th place, while John Fix sits in a tie for 16th place with a round of 85. Kyle Lindemann (88) and Chris Biebert (93) round out the MLC team scoring.

MLC will return to Pebble Creek Golf Course for Day 2 on Friday.

Women’s golf

BECKER — The MLC women’s golf team sits in seventh place following day one of the UMAC Women’s Golf Championships at Pebble Creek Golf Course.

The Knights finished Thursday’s round with a team score of 456 strokes. St. Scholastica leads the team competition with a score of 358, followed by Northwestern-St. Paul (387) and UW-Superior (410) in the top three.

Alison Lindemann finished round one in a tie for fourth place following a round of 91. That score trails the leader by eight strokes, but sits two strokes behind the current third-place golfer.

Cassandra Rose was the Knights’ number two golfer on day one with a score of 116, followed by Lexi Fischer (121), Melina Satorius (128) and Rebecca Schilling (157).

MLC will return to Pebble Creek Golf Course for Day 2 Friday, October 4.
