Week 6 area prep football preview: MVL hopes to keep building, while Cathedral, NUHS attempt to bounce back

NEW ULM — Two of the three local high schools will be at home this Friday for the sixth week of football.

Both Minnesota Valley Lutheran and New Ulm High School will have home contests against Tracy-Milroy-Balaton and Jordan, respectively, while New Ulm Cathedral will play a road contest at Adrian.

The MVL and New Ulm High School games have 7 p.m. kickoffs, while Cathedral’s game at Adrian has a 4 pm. kickoff.

NEW ULM CATHEDRAL (1-4) AT ADRIAN (3-2) 4 P.M. FRIDAY ADRIAN

Greyhounds head coach Denny Lux said that his team will be facing a very physical team when they meet the Dragons in a Southwest District, East Subdistrict contest.

“They have good size up front and their tailback is a third-year starter and he is 6 foot 2, 195 pounds, so they are a team that has a lot of weapons,” Lux said. “Their quarterback is also a good athlete and he throws the ball well. Their offense looks very similar to what we have seen from them in the past and that is why they are running their offense as well as they are because they are used to it. And we have played them three times in the last three years (2-1 record against them) and they have given us different looks defensively. They are a good football team.”

Lux also compared Adrian’s players up front to Wabasso’s when it came to size and moving well.

Lux thinks that his team needs to use deception and speed to try and counter the size advantage that the Dragons will have.

“This will be Carter’s (Haala, Cathedral quarterback) second game starting for us and he got an extra week of practice for us, so he can get those handoffs crisp,” Lux said. “It is about speed and deception, getting in the hole and making sure we get positive yards. I felt that we outplayed Murray County Central last week in the second half. We have good guys — good guys that care — so we are going to bounce back and play four good quarters this week.”

Lux added that his team needs to score as they have scored just one touchdown in their last three games.

“But I think what I need to do is to call timeouts earlier in that first quarter and we need to make those adjustments earlier.”

TRACY-MILROY-BALATON (2-3) AT MINNESOTA VALLEY LUTHERAN (1-4) 7 P.M. FRIDAY JOHNSON FIELD

MVL head coach Jim Buboltz said that the Panthers are a very dangerous team offensively.

“Their quarterback (Sawyer Otto) is a true run-pass option player, so we have to have one guy spying on him,” Buboltz said. “He can distribute the ball all over the place with his arm or his legs. We have not faced a quarterback like him this season — they do have some power runners but in the big scheme of things everything runs through the quarterback.

“We need to try and keep him in the pocket. We are going to show him different defensive front looks.”

Buboltz said that the Chargers’ offense needs to solidify their execution and finish drives. “We do have big play capability but we need to drive the ball down the field, and that starts with our blocking — we need to be 100 percent sure who we are blocking and then making sure we are staying on those blocks longer.

“We stuck together last week (in the win over Sleepy Eye) and that gives me confidence going forward.”

Buboltz said that his offensive line also needs to play well.

“This is a big game for us — we want to finish in the upper part of the section and we still have a chance to do that,” he said. “We need to take care of the ball, and if we do, we will be just fine.”

JORDAN (4-1) AT NEW ULM HIGH SCHOOL (3-2) FRIDAY 7 P.M. NEW ULM HIGH SCHOOL

The one thing that one will notice about Jordan is that they can score points.

They average 44.4 points a game, and in their only loss of the season to Waseca, they scored 39 in a 42-39 loss to the Bluejays.

“They are going to throw the ball,” New Ulm coach Eric Kauffmann said about the Hubmen. “They will have trips to one side and then twins or a single receiver to the other side with an empty backfield. They will drop back and let it go. I think that they will throw the ball about 40 times or more Friday — they may use a little running game — but they want to chuck it around. They are not as physical as Marshall, but they have athletes so they are going to throw it.”

Kauffmann said that he has installed different defensive fronts.

“We want to get some pressure on the quarterback, that is the main thing. If we can pressure the quarterback and force him to throw sooner than he wants to — that is our main idea. We also put in some different blitz packages in to help as well.”

He said that his team offensively needs to limit their mistakes, use misdirection and control the clock.

“Early in the season we made mistakes, but we have been good enough to overcome them. But against good teams like Marshall and Jordan we cannot make them.

“We are going to try and run the ball, use more misdirection and control the clock. We do not want to fall behind Jordan by two or three scores because they are not going to slow down. They are high-powered offenses and they will keep coming — we do not want to get down early on them.”
