Local teams are ready for Week 5

NEW ULM — For the second time in as many weeks, Murray County Central makes the long trip to New Ulm from Slayton for a Southwest District-East game when it faces New Ulm Cathedral at 7 p.m. on Friday at Johnson Feld.

Last week, the Rebels came to New Ulm and defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran.

Cathedral will be the only local team at home Friday as MVL and New Ulm High School have road contests at Sleepy Eye and Marshall respectively.

MURRAY COUNTY CENTRAL (3-1) AT NEW ULM CATHEDRAL (1-3), 7 P.M., FRIDAY, JOHNSON FIELD

Cathedral head football coach Denny Lux said that the Rebels, coming off of a 33-14 win over MVL last week, are a familiar foe for the Greyhounds.

“They use their throwing and running game,” he said. “We are fairly familiar with them because of the teams that we also play — we see that kind of spread. And defensively they have shown us a couple of different defenses. But with our offense we have to prepare for what we may get from their defense.”

Lux said that the Rebels have some big players who are hard runners.

“That has been their staple the last few seasons so we are not surprised that they have someone [Dylan Johnson] to fill that role,” Lux said.

Lux said that the Rebels’ passing game “is a controlled passing game. It seems like they are looking more for first downs. But they will be a 50-50 team as far as the pass and run goes.”

MINNESOTA VALLE LUTHERAN (0-4) AT SLEEPY EYE PUBLIC (0-4), 7 P.M., FRIDAY, SLEEPY EYE

Both teams come in looking for their first win of the season and both have similar statistics. MVL has been outscored by an average of 24-7 each game while the Indians have been outscored 34-5 a game.

“They try to move the ball around offensively,” Chargers coach Jim Buboltz said. “They run that double wing with motion so we need to be able to find the football and we need to stay true to both sides of the ball. We are a hungry football team and so are they. We are going to have to match their intensity. We have not seen the double wing this season but we have in the past.”

Buboltz said that the Chargers need to take care of the ball.

“We were able to move the ball but now we need to take care of it,” Buboltz said. “We need to be more consistent with that.”

Last week the Chargers ran 14 offensive plays in the last half and turned the ball over three times.

Buboltz said that his team is healthy for this week including quarterback Mason Cox who had a bruised hand.

“We need to play like we did in the first quarter last week (14-0 lead and forced three turnovers) and carry that through four quarters,” Buboltz said.

NEW ULM HIGH SCHOOL (3-1) AT MARSHALL (4-0), 7 P.M., FRIDAY, MARSHALL

New Ulm head coach Eric Kauffmann said that Marshall is a big, physical team.

“They can run and throw — they are well-coached and disciplined. They are 4-0 for a reason,” Kauffmann said.

This season, the Tigers have outscored opponents by an average of 40-7 a game.

“They will run and pass — they are a strong wing-T type of team but I think that they want to run the ball,” Kauffmann said. “They do run some play-action passes to keep the defensive backs on their toes.”

Kauffmann said that his game plan does not change from week to week.

“We want to control the ball — run the ball and control the clock — and keep their offense off of the field as much as we can,” he said. “That is our goal every week and it will not change this week.”
