New Ulm defeats Waseca in Big South

NEW ULM — New Ulm defeated Waseca 25-15, 24-20, 17-25, 25-19 on Thursday in a Big South Conference volleyball match. The Eagles remain perfect in conference play with a 6-0 record.

“We got off to a very good start, New Ulm head coach Stef Dietz said. “We played very well, we picked it up and it was a complete game.”

Dietz was pleased that the Eagles recovered well from a tournament and the team was able to post back-to-back wins.

Nora Windschill had 23 digs and 10 kills. Natalie Yackley added 15 set assists with seven kills and nine digs. Talya Hoel had 20 set assists, six kills and six digs. Ally Steffensmeier added 10 kills with 11 digs and Nicole Albrecht had 16 digs.

Dietz said the team got comfortable during the third set. She was pleased with the team’s composure and worked hard to earn the win.

Waseca matched New Ulm point for point in the fourth set. The Eagles tried to pull away but the Bluejays answered.

The Bluejays tied it at 15-15 on a block at the net. New Ulm responded with a 10-4 run for the win. There were eight ties in the set.

Waseca took the lead early in the third set. The Bluejays took advantage of some Eagle mistakes and earn points on good returns. New Ulm committed a serving error when it hit the ball out of bounds.

New Ulm took advantage of some Waseca miscues in the second set to have a 15-5 advantage. The Eagles carried the momentum for the remainder of the set for the win.

The Eagles played solid volleyball in the first set. The defense played well while Waseca had some mistakes a key times throughout the set. New Ulm capitalized on those miscues and finished with a 6-0 run. It scored the final set point when an Eagle dropped the ball in between two Waseca defenders.

New Ulm will host Blue Earth Area on Tuesday.
