Kalis, Owens, Mathiowetz qualify for state meet

ST. PETER — The New Ulm boys’ and girls’ track and field teams competed in Day 1 of the Region 2AA Section Meet on Wednesday at Gustavus Adolphus College, with three athletes qualifying for state already.

Heading to state for New Ulm so far this year will be Paige Kalis, Olivia Owens and Ben Mathiowetz.

Kalis took first in the long jump finals Wednesday, with a jump of 17 feet, 4 3/4 inches. Owens took first in the high jump finals (5-5), while Mathiowetz took first in the wheelchair shot put (12-10 3/4).

Sean Howk and Kaye Rysdahl also qualified for Day 2 of the meet for New Ulm in the 400-meter dash and the 800, respectively.

Howk qualified for the 400 finals after finishing in prelims with a time of 51.81 seconds, which currently sits third of nine runners. Rysdahl finished in the 800 prelims with a time of 2:25.96, which currently is seeded eighth of nine runners.

Mathiowetz will also compete in the wheelchair discus on Friday. Field events kick off Day 2 of the meet at 10 a.m. Friday, while the boys’ 400 begins around 12:05 p.m. and the girls’ 800 begins around 12:28 p.m. at Gustavus.
