Wabasso 5, Edgerton/Southwest MN Christian 2

WABASSO — A three-run fourth inning was enough to help Wabasso take down Edgerton/Southwest MN Christian 5-2 on Saturday in nonconference baseball action.

The Rabbits were led by Ty Altermatt, who went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs. Altermatt also got the win on the mound, pitching five innings, striking out four and allowing one earned run on seven walks and three hits.

Brock Rohlik also had a base hit and an RBI for Wabasso, while Colby Wall had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk and Carter Benz had a hit. Ryan Liebl pitched two innings in relief of Altermatt and struck out two while giving up one hit and a walk.

Each team commited three errors and Wabasso outhit Edgerton 5-4.

Jacob Van Dam took the loss for Edgerton in three innings of relief, giving up three earned runs.

Wabasso (5-9) hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s at 5 p.m. Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference game.

BOLD 1, Springfield 0

MILROY — BOLD eked past Springfield on Saturday in a nonconference baseball game at Irish Yard on Saturday morning.

Aaron Salonek led the Springfield bats with a 2-for-3 day at the plate, while Henry Scheitel and and Isaac Fink each added a hit for the Tigers, who had four hits total in the game.

Fink took the loss, giving up the one earned run on three walks and three hits while striking out four in five innings of work. Mitchell Leonard pitched two innings in relief for Springfield, giving up two hits.

Springfield 20, Lac qui Parle Valley 6 (5 innings)

MILROY — Springfield ended its varsity invite in a big way on Saturday, rebounding after its earlier loss to BOLD to pick up a 20-6 win over Lac qui Parle Valley in five innings of nonconference baseball at Irish Yard.

Decker Scheffler led the Tigers by going 4 for 4 with two RBIs and a triple, while Mitchell Leonard had a homer and three RBIs. Mason Rummel was 3 for 4 for the Tigers with four RBIs, while Aaron Salonek had two hits and scored two runs and Isaac Fink had three RBIs and a double.

Scheffler got the win in two innings, allowing five earned runs on three hits and five walks while striking out five. Ivan Hovland pitched three innings for the Tigers and struck out six while allowing two hits.

Springfield (14-2) is at Johnson Park to take on New Ulm Cathedral at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

AC/GE 9, Madelia 8

GLENVILLE — Luke Hennis had a game-tying grand slam in the top of the seventh against Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons on Saturday, but AC/GE added a single run in the bottom of the inning to walk off with a 9-8 win over Madelia in nonconference baseball action.

Luke Hennis added a double and six RBIs to lead Madelia at the plate, but he also ended up taking the loss in two innings of work, allowing five walks and three unearned runs. Alex Hennis, Luke Hennis’ younger brother, pitched the first 5 1/3 innings before exiting with six strikeouts, four walks allowed, five hits allowed and three earned runs allowed.

Logan Anderson added a solo home run for Madelia, who are now 7-7 and host Nicollet at 5 p.m. on Tuesday in Searles.

Prep softball

Nicollet 14, Madelia 4 (5 innings, 80-minute limit)

NICOLLET — Nicollet downed Madelia 14-4 on Saturday at the Nicollet softball tournament, led by an eight-run third inning.

Jessi Johnson led the Raiders, going 2 for 4 with an RBI and three runs scored, while Marah Hulke, Olivia Whitmore, Halle Johnson, Hayley Selby and Alysha Strunk all had a hit and an RBI. Nicole Hall also had a hit and three runs scored for Nicollet, while Morgan Arndt had a hit, an RBI and a run scored.

Halle Johnson got the five-inning win for Nicollet, allowing four earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four.

For Madelia, Corban Tatro took the loss in five innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and six walks while striking out two.

Malia Schwanke led the Blackhawk bats with two hits and an RBI, while Tatro added a hit, an RBI and a run scored. Abby Jacobs and Addie Ahern each had a hit and a run scored also for Madelia.

St. Paul Como Park 9, Madelia 8 (3 innings, 80-minute limit)

NICOLLET — In Madelia’s second game of the day at the Nicollet softball tournament, St. Paul Como Park picked up a 9-8 win over the Blackhawks on Saturday.

Maiah Hennager led Madelia by going 3 for 3 with two RBIs and a triple, while Blair VanZee was 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs. Also for Madelia, Malia Schwanke was 2 for 2 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Addie Ahern was 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored.

Kylie Smith took the loss for Madelia in three innings, allowing six earned runs on five walks and six hits while striking out seven.

Sibley East 13, Madelia 4 (4 innings, 80-minute limit)

NICOLLET — Madelia fell 13-4 to Sibley East in four innings in the Blackhawks’ third and final game of the Nicollet softball tournament on Saturday.

Leading Madelia at the plate was Corban Tatro, who was 1 for 2 with an RBI, while Maiah Hennager and Malia Schwanke each had a hit and a run scored. Tatro took the loss in three innings, giving up seven earned runs.

For Sibley East, Sydney Schott earned the win in four innings with seven strikeouts. Alivia Strack was 3 for 3 with two RBIs for Sibley East, while Rachel Widmer was 2 for 3 with three RBIs.

Madelia (1-16, 0-7) next plays at Caswell Park on Friday in the Valley Conference Showcase.

Sibley East 8, Nicollet 1 (6 innings, 80-minute limit)

NICOLLET — In Nicollet’s second game of the day at its home softball tournament, Sibley East came away with an 8-1 win.

Nicollet got a hit each from Nicole Hall, Marah Hulke, Halle Johnson, Jessi Johnson and Olivia Whitmore, with Hall scoring the lone run.

Halle Johnson took the loss in 4 1/3 innings, giving up seven earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five. Hulke pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief, striking out three and allowing one earned run on a hit and two walks.

Como Park 7, Nicollet 3 (5 innings, 80-minute limit)

NICOLLET — St. Paul Como Park picked up a 7-3 win over Nicollet in five innings in Nicollet’s final game of its home softball tournament.

Nicole Hall led the Raiders, going 2 for 3 with a run scored and a double. Halle Johnson, Brook Gohr and Alysha Strunk each had a hit and an RBI for the Raiders, while Marah Hulke had a triple.

Hayley Selby took the loss in four innings, giving up four earned runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out five.

Nicollet hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Girls’ golf

New Ulm takes 1st at Mankato Invite

NORTH MANKATO — The New Ulm girls’ golf team took first at Mankato Invite on Saturday at North Links Golf Course, finishing with a score of 364.

Mankato East was second (380), St. Peter took third (388), Mankato West was fourth (406), Mounds View was fifth (413) and Austin finished sixth (496).

New Ulm’s Abbey Frauenholtz shot an 82 to finish as the medalist, while Jana Julia Boquet was second overall with an 84. Also for New Ulm, Izzie Wolkow carded a 96, while Paige Jacobs shot a 102.

New Ulm competes

at Big South Conference Championship

WASECA — The New Ulm boys’ and girls’ track and field teams competed at the Big South Conference Championship in Waseca on Saturday, with several Eagles athletes turning in All-Conference performances.

For the New Ulm girls, Paige Kalis took first in the long jump (17 feet), second in the 100-meter dash (13.34) and was part of the first-place 4×100-meter relay team with Anne Howard, Olivia Owens and Emmy Munson (52.64). Owens also took first in the high jump (5-2), while Erika Ebert finished first in the pole vault (8-9).

Kalis also took fourth in the 400 (27.5), while Kaye Rysdahl took fourth in the 800 (2:29.89).

For the boys, Ben Mathiowetz was first in the wheelchair shotput (13-2 3/4) and wheelchair discus (29-2 1/2), both personal and school records. Sean Howk finished third in the 400 (52.36), while the boys’ 4×100 team of Jack Howard, Brandon Ocampo, Aaron Hauser and Howk took second (46.65).

MVL girls take 1st, boys 2nd at LSH Giant Relays

LESUEUR — The Minnesota Valley girls’ trakc and field team finished first (179.5) out of nine teams at the LeSueur-Henderson Giant Relays on Friday, while the MVL boys took second (155) out of nine teams.

For the MVL girls, Kaylee Hunter took second in the 300-meter hurdles (53.66), while the girls’ 4×100-meter (53.35) and 4×400-meter relay teams finished first (4:26.26). Also for MVL, Hannah Marzinske (31-09.5) and Hunter (30-09.25) took second and third, respectively, in the triple jump.

In the shot put, Emma Nelson took second (32-02), while Mara Weisensel took third in the discus (101-02).

For the MVL boys, Izayah Harrison took first in the 100 (11.48), while Zach Helget took third (11.76). Trent Fluegge finished third in the 300-meter hurdles (46.68), while Jake Kettner took second and third, respectively, in the high jump (6-00) and long jump (18-07).

The MVL coed distance medley team took first (4:18.89), while Matthew Beussman took third in the triple jump (37-00.5).

Sleepy Eye United and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop also took part in the Giant Relays, with the SEU girls being led by Abby Hagen (2:34.66) and Ellie Tonn (2:34.89), who took first and second, respectively, in the 800. Hagen also took first in the 1,600 with a time of 5:42.82.

For the SEU boys, Jose Ibarra took first in the 800 with a time of 2:08.43.

For the GFW girls, Carly Thompson took third in the 100 (13.47) and first in the long jump (15-00.5). Olivia Schwarzrock took first in the discus (108-04), while the GFW girls’ 4×100-meter weight person relay team took first (1:00.29).

The GFW boys were led by McKray Schmidt’s second-place finish in the discus (135-02).
