St. Peter knocks off New Ulm

NEW ULM — Before the season started, St. Peter was regarded as one of the favorites in the Big South Conference tennis standings.

On Tuesday, the Saints showed just why they earned that distinction with a 7-0 win against New Ulm at New Ulm High School.

At No. 1 singles, Emma Maudal dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision to St. Peter’s Lili Elofson and at No. 2 singles, Makia Otto lost 6-3, 6-2 to Caitlyn Salfer.

Abby Hietala lost 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to Grace Werner and at No. 4 singles, Hannah Blumhoefer lost 6-1, 6-0 to Amelia Hildebrandt.

In doubles action, the sister duo of Kellyn Emerson and Malia Emerson lost 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles to Lizzy Orth and Amelia Wernsing. Abbey Frauenholtz and Ashtyn Wiltscheck lost 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 at No. 2 doubles to Ella Boomgarden and Milena Lund and at third doubles, Carli Bottena nd Bethany Janssen lost 6-0, 6-1 to Emily Salfer and Josie Wiebusch as the Saints swept the doubles portion of the event.

New Ulm returns to action on Thursday when it travels to Fairmont.
