New Ulm falls to Searles

SEARLES — Casey Lux allowed just three hits, all singles in the first three innings, as Searles improved to 2-1 in the Tomahawk East League with a 4-2 win over the New Ulm Brewers Sunday.

Wade French took the loss in relief for the Brewers (1-2). He pitched the final three innings and allowed two runs on three hits. New Ulm starter Evan Furst, making his initial start of the season, went the first five innings and permitted two runs on five hits while striking out five.

Rob Maidl, Dan Reinke and Dan Drexler each had two hits for the Grizzlies.

“We have to hit the ball better,” Brewers manager Al For said. “That is all that mattered. We had good pitching today — we had a couple of untimely errors and a bad bounce single for them. That kind of was the tone of the game.”

The Grizzlies, who play at Stark Wednesday at 8 p.m., used a home field bounce to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Frank Forstner walked, and Maidl singled. Dan Reinke followed with a ground ball towards Brewers’ third baseman Landon Rewitzer who had the ball take a bad hop over his left shoulder allowing Forstner to score.

The Brewers, who are at Leavenworth Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., notched the game in the second. Landon Rathmann singled, and Jason Shaul walked. A sacrifice bunt by Rewitzer preceded a sacrifice fly from Nick Fischer that plated Rathmann.

A lead-off walk to Rathmann in the fourth allowed the Brewers to tie the game. A Shaul sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch and a Rewitzer sacrifice fly made it 2-2.

“We have been hitting the ball well,” Flor said. “But our bats have been quiet in our last two games.”

Searles would score a run in the seventh and eighth off of French. An RBI single from Steve Kloeckl in the seventh broke the 2-2 tie before Dan Drexler doubled in an insurance run in the eighth.

Flor said that he was pleased with the showing of Furst in his start.

“The most innings he had thrown was three innings for the JV at Augustana,” he said. “He threw well and we were very happy with the way he pitched. We are slow starters to begin the season. We do not have all of our young players yet.”
