St. Mary’s boys fall to MCC, MVL girls win

Boys’ basketball

MCC 62, St. Mary’s 41

SLEEPY EYE — Murray County Central defeated Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 62-41 in prep boys’ basketball on Friday at the Sleepy Eye Invitational.

St. Mary’s leading scorers were Blake Steffensmeier who scored 8 points and Collin Ludewig who scored 6 points.

Both teams play again on Saturday at the Sleepy Eye invitational. Murray County Central plays against Sleepy Eye at 11 a.m. and St. Mary’s plays against Tracy-Milroy-Balaton at 1 p.m.

GHEC/ML/T 66, Madelia 47

MADELIA — Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther/Truman defeated Madelia in the Madelia Tournament on Friday.

Ja-Sean Glover led Madelia with 21 points. GHEC/ML/T led 28-18 at halftime.

Madelia plays Alden-Conger at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the third-place game.

Girls’ basketball

MVL 61, Springfield 41

SPRINGFIELD — Minnesota Valley Lutheran defeated Springfield 61-41 on Friday in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game.

MVL was led by Haley Birkholz who scored 18 points. Also for MVL, Maddie Spurgin had 12 points, Lauren Paulsen had 11 points and seven rebounds, and Emma Nelson had 10 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

Springfield’s leading scorer was Sydney Hauger who scored 17 points.

MVL (2-1) hosts Wabasso at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Springfield (0-2) hosts Cedar Mountain/Comfrey at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

Nicollet 62, Sibley East 57

ARLINGTON — Nicollet defeated Sibley East 62-57 on Friday in a nonconfrence girls’ basketball game.

Nicollet was led by Sidney Botker who scored 16 points. Also for Nicollet, Sarah Haugum scored 15 points, and Nicole Hall scored 7 points and had six rebounds.

Sibley East was led by Taylor Brinkman who scored 16 points. Also for Sibley East, Rachel Rettmann scored 15 points and Mckenzie Latzke scored 13 points.

Nicollet (2-0) plays at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Alden Conger. Sibley East hosts Norwood-Young America at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
