St. Scholastica sweeps MLC in soccer

Men’s soccer

DULUTH — The Martin Luther College men’s soccer team lost 3-1 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action at St. Scholastica on Saturday.

The Saints entered the match atop the UMAC standings with the highest-scoring offense in the conference, but the Knights defense kept them off the scoreboard until the 31st minute, allowing CSS to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Saints added a second goal in the 56th minute, and then tacked on a final insurance tally in the 86th minute before MLC’s Luke Meihack scored the lone MLC goal less than one minute later. The goal was Meihack’s fourth of the season.

Hugo Ugalde-Bemer led MLC with two shots. Joseph Graumann, Justin Digman and Meihack were each credited in one shot on goal.

MLC keeper Caleb King stopped nine of the Saints’ 12 shots on goal.

The Knights fell to 4-6 on the season and 3-2 in UMAC play with the loss. CSS improved to 9-2 overall and 7-0 in conference play with the win.

MLC will return to action on Wednesday when it hosts Crown College in a game scheduled to start at 3:15 p.m.

Women’s soccer

DULUTH — The MLC women’s soccer team battled St. Scholastica to a scoreless tie through regulation before allowing a goal early in overtime to lose 1-0.

The Knights hung tough throughout the game despite a significant edge in shots for CSS, but the Saints were able to finally get a penalty kick past MLC keeper Erin Feddersen in the 93rd minute following an MLC foul in the box.

The Knights’ veteran defense, led by seniors Sarah Kell, Emily Muir and Elise Rosenbaum allowed 23 total shots, but combined with Feddersen to keep the Saints scoreless through regulation.

MLC was credited with three shots on the day, with all of them (including two shots on goal) coming from Martha Balge.

Feddersen stopped nine of the 10 shots she faced in goal for the Knights.

MLC fell to 5-4-2 on the season and 4-1-1 in UMAC play in defeat. CSS improved to 6-5-2 overall and 5-1-1 in league play with the win.

The Knights will return to action on Wednesday when they host Crown College in a game scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

Women’s golf

ALEXANDRIA — The MLC women’s golf team finished in sixth place at the UMAC Golf Championships at Alexandria Golf Club on Saturday and secured its best three-day total at the event in program history.

The Knights improved on their team score for the second straight day at the three-day event, finishing Saturday’s final round with 429 total strokes. MLC finished the tournament with a total of 1300 strokes.

Alison Lindemann shot 93 on Saturday, her best round of the tournament, and finished the event in 14th place with a total score of 287.

Katheryn Hansen shot 106 on Saturday to finish in a tie for 24th with a total score of 317. Sydney Peterson, Elizabeth Mantz and Anne Russell finished 30th, 32nd and 33rd, respectively, on the final individual leaderboard.

St. Scholastica took first at the event with a three day team score of 1,066. Minnesota Morris (1,133) and Northwestern (1,148) rounded out the top three.

Men’s golf

ALEXANDRIA — The MLC men’s golf team finished the three-day UMAC Championships at Alexandria Golf Club with its best team score of the season to take seventh place at the event.

The Knights opened in last place thanks to a round of 354 on Thursday, but improved to 337 on Friday, and then shot a season-best 327 on Saturday to finish the week with a total team score of 1018. Saturday’s score was fifth-best out of the nine teams in attendance.

Ethan Jaeger led the way on Saturday with a season-best round of 77, followed by rounds of 80 and 81 from Alex Lindemann and Zackary Zuberbier, respectively.

Lindemann was the top player for MLC over the three-day with a final score of 239, good for 17th place on the final leaderboard. Jaeger finished 24th, while Zuberbier tied for 26th.

St. Scholastica took first in the team competition with a final team score of 926, followed by Northwestern (932) and UW-Superior (933).
