McBroom sweeps up Thunderbirds 48-27

WINTHROP — Waterville-Elysian-Morristown’s Grant McBroom threw five touchdown passes to lead WEM past Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 48-27 on Friday in a South Central District, Blue Subdistrict football contest.

McBroom went 11 for 17 for 222 yards.

Grant McBroom threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Tyson Miska for WEM’s first touchdown. Will Stock kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Tyler Glende scored WEM’S next touchdown on a 1-yard run later in the first quarter. Storch’s kick gave WEM a 14- 0 advantage.

GFW was able to keep its next drive alive by converting two fourth down plays. The result was an 11-yard run by Jancarlo Munoz at 10:05. David Herrera’s kick was good to close the gap to 14-7.

WEM’s Tanner Ranslow answered with a 76-yard kickoff return and Storch’s kick made it 21-7 for the Buccaneers.

The Thunderbirds scored with under a minute left in the first half. They converted on fourth down and scored on an Evan Martin 1-yard TD run. Herrera’s kick for the extra point was blocked making it 21-13 at halftime.

There were four consecutive possessions that resulted in a scoring drive in the first half.

McBroom went to work as he hit Ranslow with a 25-yard touchdown pass. Storch’s kick was good for a 28-13 lead.

GFW put together an eight-play 80-yard drive capped off by a 53-yard touchdown run by Munoz. Munoz tried to run for a 2-point conversion, but failed.

McBroom hit Kurtis Crosby with a 35-yard TD pass. Storch’s kick made it 35-19.

Taylor Glende intercepted a GFW pass and took it to the GFW 18-yard line. On the next play, McBroom found Adam Rients for an 18-yard TD pass. Storch’s kick gave WEM a 42-19 lead.

Munoz then raced 90 yards for a GFW TD.

McBroom threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Wyatt Storch at 8:21 of the final quarter. Will Storch’s kick was blocked and the final score was 48-27.

Munoz was GFW’s “workhorse” rushing 22 times for 280 yards and three touchdowns. Evan Martin was 4 for 11 passing for 39 yards. Martin had one rushing touchdown.
