New Ulm Brewers blow out Courtland Cubs 11-1 in 8

NEW ULM — The New Ulm Brewers beat the Courtland Cubs 11-1 in eight innings in a Tomahawk East League game on Wednesday.

Dylan Klein pitched eights innings, giving up only one run earning five strikeouts in the outing.

Brody Peterson singled into left field followed by a walk dealt to Landon Rewitzer with no outs in the second inning. Klein dropped a bunt down the third-base line to load the bases still with no outs for the Brewers.

Mike Schlottmann’s line-drive double into left-center scored two runs in the second for New Ulm. The Brewers scored two runs from three hits to end the second inning.

New Ulm put pressure on Courtland in the fifth after putting two runners in scoring position. An error by Courtland’s Tyler Coners advanced the runners. Cubs pitcher Cody Coners helped himself defensively by getting his glove on a ground ball hit by the Brewers’ Klein to end the inning and leaving two runners in scoring position.

Cody Coners pitched seven innings and was charged with nine runs and the loss for the Cubs.

Schlottmann led off the sixth inning with a walk and a sacrifice bunt by Connor Forbrook pushed the runner into scoring position before Zach More delivered a standup RBI double into center field for the Brewers.

New Ulm added two more runs in the sixth inning from a fielding error and an RBI from Wade French.

Courtland threatened in the top of the seventh inning after loading the bases from a walk, a single and a hit batsman after one out. Rewitzer pulled in a ground ball over the bag in fair territory, stepping on third and throwing home for the double play to get out of the inning for the Brewers.

The Cubs broke the shutout in the eighth inning, scoring one run from three hits and ending the inning with a 1-6-3 double play put up by the Brewers.

New Ulm loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth before a hit batsman scored a run to force Courtland to bring in relief pitching from Keith Bessmer.

New Ulm put up four runs to end the game in the bottom half of the eight inning with one out.

Courtland’s Bessmer went 3 for 4 to lead the Cubs.

Schlottmann was 2 for 3 with three RBIs scoring twice, and French was 4 for 6 with one RBI for the Brewers.
