Why is the HRC ineffective?

To the editor: According to Sec. 3.03 of the city code, the New Ulm Human Rights Commission (HRC) was established to ensure compliance with state nondiscrimination statutes, to educate the public on human rights issues, and to improve human relations in the city. The members of the HRC should be given credit for the time and effort they contribute. However, the HRC, on balance, has not lived up to its potential as a force for improving human relations in the city. Why is that? I would like to suggest five possible reasons. To the editor: Walking tour I am a proud member of the Cathedral High School class of ‘68. We recently celebrated our 55th class reunion. As a part of our activities, some of us signed up for the walking tour about our Sioux Indian Uprising, or the Dakota Conflict. We requested Terry Sveine. And he did not disappoint. He was charming, affable, knowledgeable, and was able to bring to life that time frame and what it was like for the settlers in a down to earth, gritty way. To the editor: Last night (Sept. 11) while most of us went about our business as usual, a dinner meeting was unrolling in Sleepy Eye – key players in our Republican Party. Let us hear both sides

To the editor: A coin has two sides; politics does too. Some people feel just one side can be true. While that may be, what of the other side? At least let us see it. Don’t let it hide. Let the people make their own decisions. Encourage thinking, debate and visions. The opinion page is the place for that. The views of others is more than chitchat. The editor is the one to decide. America has lost its unity since 9/11

To the editor: Have we forgotten — 9/11 brought this nation to its knees into total unity with respect, compassion, togetherness and true patriotism through an horrific event. What do we have now. Not the unity, patriotism and love of this country as we did on 9/11 and with its aftermath. Now, we have nothing but division everywhere with hate, violence, killing babies and cancel culture at the forefront. No excuses

To the editor: How convenient. The front page of the Journal (08-31-2023) headlines our local schools’ failure to educate our kids, and blames (of course) COVID-19. Truth be told, the MCA Data by year wasn’t all that impressive before the “pandemic” either. I encourage Journal readers to go to the ISD 88 website and check out the numbers for the last 6 years (2020 not included). The website celebrates the “95% Graduation Rate” for the district. Should we really celebrate sending 95% of our seniors into the world when only an average of 45% of them can perform to grade ...
