We have freedom of speech in America

To the editor:

“No kings” is the foundation our nation was built upon

“No kings” is more than just a slogan — it’s the foundation our nation was built upon. In America, we don’t have kings and we won’t back down against chaos, corruption, and cruelty.

In America, we have freedom of speech. There will be chants and posters-some more pointed than others. A core principle behind all No kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action. It is expected that weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.

The beauty of the freedom of speech is everyone is free to agree or disagree. All participants are expected to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events.

A couple of points to consider as you prepare for the no kings event — either as a supporter or non-supporter. 1. Anger often rises to the surface because of fear. 2. Consider that insults and name calling may not be considered nonviolent action. 3. Ask yourself some questions: What is it you are afraid of? What could you learn by learning the alternative proposals of others? What do you have to lose by having a polite and curious conversation?

I look forward to seeing you at the no kings event.
