What is a socialist?

To the editor:

Almost weekly, someone pens a letter to the editor, making the ridiculous claim that a vote for a Democrat is a vote for a radical socialist. Very few Democrats are socialists (much less, radical socialists). There are extreme versions of socialism: National Socialism on the right, Marxist Communism on the left. Democratic socialists steer clear of those extremes.

Every American is a socialist, more or less. Have you or your loved ones ever relied on Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, TANF, SNAP, subsidized housing, the GI Bill, a labor union, collective bargaining, farm subsidies, corporate welfare, bankruptcy, disaster assistance, state or federal low-interest loans, grants in aid to students or small businesses?

Where do socialists get some of their crazy ideas? Open the Bible. For starters, read Exodus, Isaiah, the Sermon on the Mount, and Acts of the Apostles.
