Benedict Robert Brunner was born June 7, 1934, in New Ulm to Benedict F. and Catherine (Brandel) Brunner and attended grade school in St. George. Benedict proudly served his country with the U.S. Army from 1956-1957. He was united in marriage to Marlene B. Melquist on June 29, 1957, in Fairfax, Minnesota. This union blessed the couple with two daughters, whom together they raised in New Ulm. Early in their married life, Benedict and Marlene lived in Sleepy Eye and later St. Cloud before making New Ulm their home. Benedict worked a proud and dedicated 31-year career with New Ulm Telcom/Nuvera as a lineman and repairman before his retirement in 1997. As a man who liked to stay busy, he could commonly be found working on projects in his garage. He always enjoyed getting to help work with local farmers in Klossner and also commonly helped haul cattle to Zumbrota with Scott. Countless family memories were made over the years at their lake home on Lake Hattie near Backus. Benedict also enjoyed his trips to visit family and friends in Cincinnati and Delaware. As an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, but especially enjoyed his hunting trips to Montana and Wyoming. He was a dedicated member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was also a past member of the New Ulm Battery. Although his passing seems sudden and unexpected to most, many cherished memories will forever stay in the hearts and minds of all who knew him best. Blessed be his memory.
