Bernice “Beanie” Becken

Bernice “Beanie” Becken, age 95, of Hanska, died Thursday April 25, 2019 at Living Meadows Home of Madelia.

Burial will be at Nora Unitarian Universalist Church of Hanska.

Bernice “Beanie” Becken was born March 18, 1924 in Lake Hanska Township to Andrew and Julia (Ouren) Vee. Beanie grew up in Hanska and graduated from Hanska High School. After high school she moved to Minneapolis and worked for Honeywell during World War II. After the war she moved back home to Hanska where she was an assistant at the offices of Dr. Fesenmaier and Dr. Ulvestad. She married Norman Lundgren Becken on August 25, 1950 in Minneapolis. They then worked together at the Herald Publishing Co. where Norman took over as owner after his father retired. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, American Legion Auxiliary, and enjoyed singing in various choirs. She loved visiting with family and friends (especially over coffee), bowling, playing cards, and could always find room for sweets. A woman of tradition, polite to an extreme and possessed a true Norwegian sense of humor. Always got a kick out of the zany behavior of her two great-grandsons.

She is survived by her son, N. Ross Becken of Hanska; granddaughter, Jacqueline Hicks and husband of New Ulm; great-grandsons Vaughn and Drake Hicks of New Ulm; nieces and nephews, and lots of in-laws. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters, Smila Lee, Arlene Schmeising, Mildred Botten, and Orphy Bright, and brother, Clayton (Pete) Vee.
