Five dead in crash on U.S. 71

WINDOM — Five people were killed and eight injured in a head-on crash Friday in Cottonwood County, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. The crash involved a 2016 GMC Terrain and a 2019 Ford Transit Van carrying 12 passengers. The crash was reported at 4:42 p.m. near the intersection of U.S. Highway 71 and 240th Street, between Sanborn and Windom. The GMC, driven by Martin Nicklolas Hanson, 67, of Springfield, was northbound on Highway 71, and the van, driven by Matthew Arthur Schultz, 42, of Lakefield, was southbound when the vehicles collided, the State Patrol said.
