NEW ULM — Licensed barber Edward Jones opened Ed’s Chop Shop barbershop March 1 in a former beauty salon at 1606 S. Broadway.

“Finding a good barber isn’t easy. That’s why Ed started his barbershop. Let’s get you the cut you’ve been looking for,” reads Jones’ website.

Jones offers a variety of haircut styles including tapers and fades (shorter around the ears and back of head), other haircuts and shaves. A classic taper haircut is a graduated, slightly faded haircut neatly trimmed to a point at the back of the neck.

“If someone wants a haircut and has a picture of it, they can bring it in and I’ll cut their hair like it,” he added.

Jones sells a variety of hair products including gels and pomade, a hairstyle product that holds, shapes, provides shine to hair, and adds texture for a fuller appearance.

“Walk-ins are welcome,” he added.

A New Ulm resident professionally trained at Moler Barber School in Minneapolis, with more than 10 years of haircutting experience, Jones said he “believes in the confidence and power a person gets from a good haircut.”

Business hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

“I’m open later in the day, on weekends and people can book appointments with me online,” Jones said.

“I take the time to do detailed work, while others only do haircuts. There is only one other licensed barber around here that I know of,” he added.

Jones said he began cutting hair at age 16.

“My mom couldn’t afford to take my three brothers and a sister to barbershops when I was young, so I began practicing on myself and on my brothers,” said Ed.

He said he has more professional hair products available than other outlets including full lines of hair shampoo, conditioners and beard oil.
