Most popular baby names of 2023

NEW ULM — The results are in from Minnesota Health Fairview for the most popular baby names of 2023.

In Minnesota among the boys, Theodore took the top spot and Henry finished in second. This is an expected outcome, as these two names have been trading the top spot since 2021. They are in the same spot as they were in 2022. From third to 10th, the most popular names were Oliver, Liam, William, Jack, Leo, James, Noah, and Owen.

Noah and Owen are new to the list, having not made the cut last year. Levi and Benjamin failed to make the cut this year, after placing eighth and 10th in 2022. Liam is a name on the rise, as it went from ninth in 2022 to fourth in 2023.

Among the girls, Charlotte continued their reign at the top from 2022. Evelyn took over the second-place spot from Olivia, who fell back to third in 2023. The biggest jump was for Lucy, who finished in fourth despite not making the cut last year. Nora, Amelia, Sophia, Emma, Isla, and Eleanor rounded out the top 10.

Last year’s fourth place Harper did not make the top 10 in 2023. Sophia made it to seventh after missing the cut last year, and Ava is gone from the list.

Nationwide, BabyCenter found the most popular male baby name to be Noah. Liam finished in second, followed by Oliver, Elijah, Mateo, Lucas, Levi, Leo, Ezra, and Luca. Four names, Noah, Oliver, Liam, and Leo, showed up on both lists. Oliver finished third on both lists.

For girls, the most popular baby name in America was Olivia. Emma and Amelia took the second and third positions, followed by Sophia, Charlotte, Ava, Isabella, Mia, Luna, and Evelyn. The top three names were identical to 2022’s results. Five names, Olivia, Emma, Amelia, Sophia, and Evelyn, were on both lists.
