New Ulm– Eighteen River Bend students graduated Tuesday afternoon at the Community Center.

The class of 2023 overcame several obstacles to graduate. River Bend’s mission is to take students who struggled at other schools and put them on the right path. These eighteen students completed the mission.

They also went to school through the entirety of the COVID-19 pandemic, adding to the challenges they faced.

Two student speakers, Noah Krueger and Austin Northquest, shared speeches for their graduating class. Both gave thanks to their parents, classmates, and teachers for the hard work and fun they brought to River Bend.

Krueger made sure River Bend grads understood how important their support system is. “I know that it may be hard but you guys don’t realize how lucky you are to get teachers who go the extra mile and have this opportunity to get the help you need. Please do not waste this opportunity.”

Noah Krueger addresses his fellow graduates.

Northquest shared the story of how River Bend aided his educational journey. “Started in Nicollet, doing good grades. Started slipping off. Homework, never did it. By my junior year I failed six classes thinking I’m not going to graduate. Decided to come over here to River Bend to see if it would change. I just got my work done.” Northquest said

Chosen by the students to speak was teacher Melissa Bockelman. She talked about the setbacks overcome in her journey and the understanding of perseverance

The message she wanted students to take away was ‘just keep going’.

“There will be challenges, struggles and some setbacks.” Bockelman said. “Life might throw you a curveball from time to time, and this adulting thing might be overwhelming. You might want to give up. But don’t. When life is hard, just keep going.”

She balanced this message with reassurance the future has incredible potential.

“life after graduation will hold some of the most amazing experiences and memories of your life. During this time you will meet people do things and dream dreams that will amaze you. You will accomplish goals that you never thought were possible.” Bockelman said “These experiences combined will mold you into the person you will become and will shape your future. A future that can be anything you make it when life is full of joy, accomplishments, success and goals.”

River Bend Coordinator Chris Bodick ended the ceremony by reminding grads they can come back if they are struggling with what their future will be.

Starting at $4.65/week.
