NEW ULM – The New Ulm Economic Development Authority (EDA) took an earlier tour of the new Highland Apartments, Tuesday.

Kuepers Construction started on the apartment project last September. The entire project consists of four three-story apartment buildings with eight detached garages, along with a sports court, children’s playground, dog park, parking lots and stormwater ponds.

The first phase of the project would include the construction of two buildings with 38 apartments each. The second phase would include two 36-unit apartments further west on the property. When complete, the 146 new apartment units will be available in New Ulm.

The EDA tour began as construction on the first Highland Apartments neared completion. Site Superintendent Garrett Gilman led the EDA board through the different apartment units available in the building. He said the apartment had a combination of studio apartments, single-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. Each of the units come with a dedicated washer and dryer.

Gilman said 20 units in the first building had already been leased with a move-in day set for Aug. 1. Based on the strong response, Kuepers Construction began early on the second phase of construction. The foundation for building three began months ago with the footings on building four recently poured in place.

Gilman said the third and fourth buildings were have two fewer units than the first two apartments to meet zoning requirements. The extra space in the building will be used for a library and fitness room.

A recent housing study conducted in New Ulm indicated the city was in need of over 400 residential units. The EDA was excited to see the Highland Apartment would go a long way to meeting the community’s housing needs.
