NEW ULM — The puck stopped in New Ulm this weekend as the Civic Center played host to two Minnesota PeeWee State Hockey Tournaments.

The PeeWee A State Tournament and PeeWee AA State Tournament began Friday and concluded Sunday. Throughout the weekend both ice rinks hosted a hockey game.

Tournament Director Traci Schroepfer said over 300 PeeWee Hockey players took part in the tournament on 16 different teams, with eight teams per division.

Teams competing in the “A” State Tournament included River Lakes, Delano, Roseville, Hibbing-Chisholm, Minneapolis, Mankato, Warroad and Woodbury.

Delano would take third place in the tournament with Hibbing-Chisholm and Warroad battling it out in the Championship on Sunday. Hibbing-Chisholm took an early lead, scoring a goal within the first few minutes. Hibbing-Chisholm would never give up the lead, ultimately winning the “A” class Tournament, 8-2.

Teams competing in the “AA” State Tournament included Chaska-Chanhassen, Osseo-Maple Grove, Hermantown, Minnetonka, Rogers, Moorhead and Woodbury.

Chaska-Chanhassen took third in the tournament with Osseo-Maple Grove and Moorhead going head-to-head in a close championship on Sunday. The AA championship was scoreless through the first period and most of the second period.

Moorhead took twice as many shots on the goal. By the end of the game, the shot total was 28 shots by Moorhead to Osseo-Maple Grove’s 28. In the end, Osseo-Maple Grove could not stop them all.

Moorhead was able to score the first goal with two minutes left to go win the second period.

With the score 1-0 with two minutes remaining, Osseo-Maple Grove pulled the goalie on the power play. The strategy resulted in Moorhead getting a second goal. Osseo-Maple Grove managed to score a single goal within the last minute of play.

It was a great day in New Ulm for Hockey. It is estimated the tournaments brought over 1,500 spectators to New Ulm’s Civic Center.

Starting at $4.50/week.
