Madelia man charged with attempted murder

Plus two assault charges

MADELIA — A 69-year-old Madelia man accused of stabbing a man in a Madelia mobile home park Monday afternoon faces three felony charges, including 2nd-degree attempted murder in Watonwan County District Court.

David Reyna, 25 5th Street N.W., Madelia , was charged March 8 with a felony second-degree attempted murder – with intent-not premeditated charge, plus felony first-degree assault-great bodily harm and felony second-degree assault-dangerous weapon-substantial bodily harm charges. Bail was set at $750,000 without conditions, $500,000 with conditions Wednesday.

According to court documents, Madelia Police Chief Rob Prescher responded to a report of a stabbing in a mobile home at 12:45 p.m. March 6. The victim told Chief Prescher he was stabbed by Reyna, who had left the scene.

Prescher found the victim with a blood-soaked towel around his right arm, in the street of the 500 block, Center Avenue. The victim said he was getting ready for work when Reyna, who lives at the residence with him, “flipped out” on him for “literally no reason.”

The victim said he squared up to Reyna who grabbed a knife and began swinging at him and said Reyna was using methamphetamine.

Prescher was very concerned about the victim’s injuries and asked dispatch if a helicopter was available to airlift the victim. Prescher saw a puncture wound about three-quarters of an inch wide under the victim’s armpit when the victim raised his arm.

The victim said he would rather bleed than pay medical bills associated with an ambulance ride and emergency room aid, but Prescher convinced the victim to get into the ambulance when it arrived. The victim was later transferred to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

The victim was listed in stable condition Tuesday, according to a Madelia Police news release.

Prescher entered the residence and saw a trail of blood and a large knife consistent with the knife described by the victim, on the counter by the sink.

Law enforcement pinged Reyna’s cell phone and located him at a Blue Earth County salvage yard. Reyna denied stabbing the victim or that he had seen him that day and said he was at the salvage yard all day. Reyna denied using methamphetamine but a pipe was found on his person.

Salvage yard employees told Madelia Police Sgt. Travis Bottelson that Reyna did not arrived at the salvage yard until later in the afternoon, prior to his arrest.

Starting at $4.50/week.
