Riebel, Simon conclude combined 75 years elected service

BROWN COUNTY — Prairieville Township Board Supervisor Gerald Riebel and Home Township clerk Myra Simon concluded their township board careers after elections Tuesday.

Prairieville Township Clerk Tom Hirsch said Riebel got a plaque for his 43 years of service, but the board was not able to give it to him Tuesday due to his illness.

“I think it was a very nice run that he had. He enjoyed it, but it’s time to let somebody else do it,” said his wife, Diane.

Dean Hansen was unanimously elected supervisor for three years in place of Riebel. Hirsch was reelected township clerk for two years.

Hirsch said the township board proposed keeping an existing $110,000 levy. The final levy will be considered at the August board meeting.

By an 8-2 vote, the board approved returning to in-person voting, instead of mail-in voting.

“We’ll use the Sleepy Eye (community center) polling place,” Hirsch said.

In addition, Prairieville Township approved using certified Class 5 gravel on three miles of 230th Street and one mile on 300th Avenue as a three-year experiment.

Hirsch said the township approved a resolution requiring property owners requesting new road approaches to pay all costs including using 15-inch culverts, pending township board approval.

Simon was Home Township Clerk for 32 years until Luke Northhagen was appointed clerk as of Jan. 1, 2022.

“It’s been good for me. And it’s been good meeting people. Luke will be a good clerk in the future,” said Simon.

Home Township’s levy remains at $60,000.
