Pyan’s Eagle Scout project builds flag boxes for fallen veterans
NEW ULM — Owen Pyan, Eagle Scout candidate with Boy Scout Troop #25, recently completed his Eagle Scout project.
The project involved constructing flag boxes to hold the flags from the funerals of fallen U.S. military veterans. The boxes were handcrafted from red oak and finished so that the flags can be displayed by families. The boxes will be donated to the New Ulm American Legion Post 132. The Legion will take care of distributing the display cases to the families of fallen veterans.
The Optimist Club of New Ulm, which sponsors Troop 25, provided the funding for the materials to construct the boxes. Owen’s father Michael assisted with the construction of the display cases.
The idea for the project came from Owen’s late grandfather, Gene Schultz who served in the U.S. Navy during The Vietnam War. After his funeral Owen’s family received a flag box from a family friend. This sparked the idea for Owen’s Eagle Scout Project.
