New Ulm City Council interviewing mayor candidates today

NEW ULM — The New Ulm City Council is interviewing the eight candidates for the unexpired term of mayor beginning 10:30 a.m. today.

During the last city council meeting on Tuesday, May 18, the council chose to interview all eight candidates, but needed to reschedule the day of the interview. Originally the council had intended to conduct a mayoral interview during the May 18 council meeting, but because of a higher than expected number of candidates, the council needed more time to consider how to conduct the interviews.

The council chose to hold the interviews a week later. The council did not formally adjourn their May 18 meeting, but made a motion to reconvene the council meeting at 10:30 a.m. to conduct the interviews.

The council meeting will formally restart at 10:30 a.m. with the interview process expected to start at 11 a.m. The interviews are open to the public.

Each interview is expected to last 30 minutes. The entire interview process should last eight hours.

The eight mayoral candidates are Michelle Markgraf, Justin Mattson, Sam Poquette, Jeremy Reed, Charalee Reinhart-Kalk, Micah Roux, Richard Seeboth and Terry Sveine.

The council will take no official action on appointing the mayor during this meeting. The appointment is expected to occur during the 4:30 p.m. June 1 regular council meeting.
