Scaled down Oktoberfest begins Friday

NEW ULM — New Ulm is famous for its Oktoberfest celebration, but due to COVID-19 things are going to be different this year. With no safe way to host large gatherings, venues are planning scaled-back celebrations to meet the standards.

The New Ulm Area Chamber of Commerce will not hold its traditional Oktoberfest but will replace it with the Maker Fest from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3.

Artisans and crafters will line up on Minnesota Street, from Center to 3rd North, for an outdoor shopping event. The event includes food trucks from Lola’s and Sozial, and a BBQ truck. Joni’s will offer its traditional Oktoberfest food.

Lamplighter will host live music on their back patio both Oktoberfest weekends, Oct. 2-4 and Oct. 9-11.

Music with Chopper will perform 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2. Dain’s Dutchmen will perform from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, and Anoid at the Machine will perform from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. that day. Generation Gap will play from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4.

Fat City All-Stars will perform 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9. Heidi and the Good Ole Boys will play 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, followed by Hotel Blue from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. that day. Beer, Wine & Hymns will play 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11.

Admission to the event is $10 or $15 with a souvenir cup.

State Street Theater will host another “Music on the Steps” performance from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3. As the event name suggests, the concert will be held on the theater’s front steps. The concert will feature Dick Kimmel & Kelly Coyle, Machiko, and The Donner Party.

The public is encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the free concert. Goodwill offerings are appreciated.

Best Western Plus/Green Mill will feature music on the patio and ballroom. Tickets for the ballroom performances require a reservation.

The Jeremy Poland Band will play the patio from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2. Josh Norman will play on the patio at 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3. Church of Cash will play in the ballroom from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3.

Saturday, Oct. 10, Leon Olson & Dain’s Dutchman will play the Best Western ballroom from 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., followed by The Wendinger Band from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
