Court Proceedings

Brown County

District Court

• Richard Anthony Angrimson, 22, St. Paul, was charged Jan. 16 with gross misdemeanor fourth-degree assault-peace officer, gross misdemeanor obstruct legal process-interfere with peace officer and misdemeanor domestic assault.

According to court documents, New Ulm Police was dispatched to the Nova House at 4:49 a.m. Jan. 16 for a client that pushed an employee and was directing a lighter flame at the employee. At the residence, Officer Trevor Kruse was approached by Angrimson, getting so close to officers, they extended their arms to keep him at a safe distance. Angrimson’s fists were clenched.

Officers tried to talk to Angrimson about what happened but he would not answer them. He began to light a lighter and hold it up and wave it towards officers, getting uncomfortably close to them with it.

Angrimson walked towards officers with closed fists, struck Cpl. Mathew Rasmussen in the upper right shoulder with his right fist, with enough force to push him backwards. Cpl. Rasmussen tried to restrain Angrimson’s right arm. Officers tried to handcuff Angrimson as he struggled with them, before handcuffs were placed behind him.

A Nova House staff worker told police Angrimson tried to light the workers’s hair and beard on fire, then pushed him about a dozen times.

• Timothy Daniel Eng, 47, 117 Walnut St. S.E., Sleepy Eye, was charged Jan. 17 with gross misdemeanor third-degree DWI; 1 aggravating factor and DWI 0.08 within 2 hours.

According to court documents, Eng contacted the Brown County Sheriff’s Office at 1:26 a.m. Jan. 13 to report he put his car in the ditch on 260th Avenue, south of CR 27, just southeast of Sleepy Eye.

Brown County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Derek Shaw responded and asked Eng for his driver’s license in his squad car due to blowing snow and a -20 degree wind chill. Sgt. Shaw smelled an alcoholic beverage odor coming from Eng and his speech was slow and slurred.

Eng said he had five or six beers in the last 2 hours and said he was in the ditch for over an hour and tried to walk back to Sleepy Eye but turned around to stay warm, then called the crash in to stay safe.

Eng failed field sobriety tests. A preliminary breath test registered a .234. Eng was transported to the Brown County Jail. A breath test recorded a .24 value at 2:46 a.m.

• Joshua Jay Knakmuhs, 35, Westbrook, was charged with two counts of felony DWI Jan. 16.

According to court documents, Brown County Deputy Justin Bauer was on the scene of a crash near the intersection of U.S. Highway 14 and CR 16 at 5:52 p.m. Dec. 30 when he was notified of a driving complaint.

Deputy Bauer saw a vehicle travel past the crash site and followed it, noticing the suspect vehicle swerving back and forth from centerline to fog line. He stopped the suspect vehicle at Highway 14 and 9th Ave. S.W. in Sleepy Eye. Deputy Bauer smelled a very strong alcoholic beverage odor coming from the vehicle. The driver, identified as Knakmuhs, admitted to drinking a beer earlier and had glossy, bloodshot eyes. Deputy Thorsheim alerted Deputy Bauer to beers under a jacket in the vehicle back seat.

Knakmuhs failed field sobriety tests. A breath test at 7:11 p.m. reported a value of 0.24. Knakmuhs’ criminal history showed a criminal vehicular homicde conviction in Redwood County Court Oct. 12, 2009.
