Court Proceedings

Brown County District Court

• Felony and gross misdemeanor charges were filed against Jerry D. Powers, 39, Fairmont, Oct. 15, for possessing illicit drugs and introducing contraband into jail.

According to court documents, a Brown County sheriff;s deputy met with counterparts from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office near Lewisville Sept. 7 to exchange custody of Powers and transport him to the Brown County Jail on a warrant. He was handcuffed and pat searched. During the search, the deputy felt something in his right pocket and pulled out a pocket liner and lint. He again asked Powers if there was anything in his pocket, and he answered “no.”

In jail, Powers put all his belongings in a jail-issued plastic bag during booking. Jail staff noticed a white substance on the booking room chair while Powers was standing, making a phone call. A deputy tested the substance for cocaine and methamphetamine. Both tests were negative.

Staff opened the clothing bag again and noticed a larger clear bag with white powder residue on it. In Powers’ jeans, jail staff pulled out two small clear bags and discovered the larger bag tested positive for methamphetamine, as did powder outside the bag that appeared to have fallen on the counter. Test results were positive for meth.

Jail staff asked Powers when he had used it. He said he used meth and marijuana a couple days before.

Powers has a Brown County arrest warrant. He is in Kandiyohi County Jail custody and not able to respond to a summons.
