An unidentified man was found hanging to a tree in the Emil Fritsche ravine last Saturday afternoon at about four o’clock by Henry Neumann, a farmer living in the vicinity of Essig, who was searching for ginseng in the woods on the Fritsche farm. The body was hanging far back in the woods where it remained undiscovered for several weeks. ‘Mr. Neumann immediately notified the local sheriff’s office and Deputy Sheriff Wm. H. Gieseke accompanied by Coroner G.F. Reineke went to the scene of the suicide. After consulting with the Nicollet County authorities the corpse was brought to the Buenger undertaking rooms in New Ulm and the body was buried on Sunday.

Was Elderly Man

No identification papers were found on the man so nothing is known as to who he is and where he hails from. He appears to be about 55 years of age, is five feet nine inches tall, dark complexioned and wore a pair of overalls under which he wore another pair of trousers. A hat and coat were n found near the body which was hanging about a foot from the ground. The local authorities presume that the body had been hanging for several weeks at least, as many of the man’s features were unrecognizable, having been eaten away by maggots. The body was hanging about a mile and three-quarters away from the entrance in the woods.

After the body was found it was stated that children of the Emil Fritsche family had been in the woods several weeks ago Sunday and altho they had not penetrated deep enough into the woods to discover the body they had noticed a peculiar smell, which evidently had come from the corpse. They however, thought that it was some decayed animal and made no further investigation.
