In her report relative to her activities during October, which was submitted to the board of education at its regular monthly meeting, Monday evening, Miss Cora Bruess, local school nurse, states that she made a total of 133 general inspections during the past month.

144 Defective Pupils

Miss Bruess discovered that 144 pupils were defective, as follows: Defective teeth, 70; defective throat,26; defective vision, 33; other eye defects, 1; nasal defects, 3; skin defects,6; defective hearing, 4; orthopedic defects, 1. All of the defects were referred to physicians and dentists.

37 Corrections Made

A total of 37 defects, noted by Miss Bruess upon former examinations of pupils, have since been corrected, as follows: Teeth, 25; throat, 2; vision, 3; skin, 6; hearing,1.

Six Pupils Excluded

During the past month, six pupils were excluded from attending classes, three of them on account of defective skin, and the other three due to headache and temperature.

Miss Bruess, in addition to examining the school children, as stated above, was kept quite busy last month. She gave 52 health talks, made 35 home visits, eight miscellaneous visits and four investigations, and had 14 interviews.

Gaining Normally

“In weighing the children, during the past month,” the nurse says in her report, “it was found that nearly all were gaining normally. Several grades are observing regular health chores each day.” Miss Bruess also refers to the two-day tuberculosis clinic, held at the high school building, last week, when Dr. J. A. Myers of Minneapolis examined 23 patients. Details about this clinic were published in last week’s issue of the Journal.
