The local board of education, at its regular monthly meeting, held Monday evening, unanimously re-elected b Superintendent F. B. Andreen of the New Ulm public schools and voluntarily increased his salary from $3,000to $3,200 per year. In connection with this action, board members commented favorably upon the excellent /work done by Mr. Andreen since assuming his duties here at the beginning of the present school term. The salary in crease was voted in recognition of his untiring, faithful, conscientious and efficacious efforts to maintain a high standard of perfection in the local public schools. This recognition is well merited.
Was Pleasant Surprise
During the brief discussion, preceding the board’s action, Mr. Andreen absented himself from the meeting. Upon returning, later, and being advised as to the facts, the superintendent stated that the increase in W salary came as a pleasant surprise. He thanked the board members for their interest in, and recognition of, his work, and assured them that he would continue to put forth his best efforts on behalf of the local educational institutions and the children at-tending them.
Teachers’ Election Tonight
Due to the absence of President Alfred W. Mueller, and for the purpose of discussing details more fully, the board decided to defer the election of teachers until this evening, when a special meeting will be held for this purpose. It is understood that most of the instructors in the public schools desire to continue their work here, and no doubt they will all be re-elected tonight. The present teaching corps is one of the best and most efficient in the history of the local school system.
Text Books at Cost
Dr. C. A. Hintz suggested that the board take up and consider the matter of the sale of text books to the pupils at cost, by the school district. This would be a very beneficial innovation, especially to people of limited means, who have several children at-tending school. A discussion followed, during which it was brought out that the district could adopt a uniform plan, whereby books returned in good condition by the children at the close of the school year, would be purchased back by the district at a minimum reduction and re-sold to pupils the fol-lowing year. Superintendent Andreen was instructed to investigate the feasibility of such a plan and submit details thereof, including the total estimated cost of the text books, at a later meeting of the board.
Owing to the fact that President Mueller was unable to attend the fifth annual convention of the Minnesota School Board association, held in Minneapolis, Wednesday and yesterday, F.P. Zschunke was elected in his stead. Treasurer H. F. Raabe was the other local delegate.

Superintendent Andreen read the following summary of monthly attendance reports for February: Whole number belonging on last day of previous month, 672; number admitted during February, 7; number readmitted in February, 59; number received by transfer, none; number left during month, none; number transferred during month, 1; number suspended for irregular attendance, 38; number suspended for misconduct, none; whole number belonging at close of month, 706; average number belonging, 699.04; aggregate attendance in half days, 26,783; average daily attendance for month, 669.49; per cent of attendance for month, 95.2; aggregate absence in half days, 1,178; whole number enrolled for year to date, 774; whole number of tardinesses during month, 12; number of visitors for month, 19.
