Legacy Giving: A meaningful gift for years to come

Those who have experienced that great feeling you get when giving once and for short-term benefit will be pleased to hear that when you give in such a way that many people will benefit in a meaningful way far into the future, that feeling is amplified.

If New Ulm Medical Center (NUMC) has made a difference in your life or the life of a loved one, you can be part of ensuring that the community can continue to benefit from the care and services provided there.

“The availability of healthcare is important to all of us, and one of the best ways to guarantee the future of healthcare close to home is through legacy giving,” said Missy Dreckman, Director of the New Ulm Medical Center Foundation and Allina Health Regional Foundation Director.

Legacy giving is an easy and effective way to be generous without sacrificing your ability to meet current and future financial obligations. Leaving a legacy gift to NUMC Foundation helps donors sustain the NUMC organization and serve the community for years to come.

A legacy gift is a donation that is given through a will or other form of beneficiary designation. Anyone can make a legacy gift, regardless of age, income, or assets.

“It’s a smart way to make meaningful gifts to organizations you care about,” Dreckman said. “Legacy giving can offer financial opportunities for you or your beneficiaries, depending on your circumstances and the type of gift. This can include reduced income taxes and capital gains taxes and other benefits.”

Here are some of the most common ways to leave a legacy gift:

• Designate a charitable organization as a beneficiary of your retirement fund [(e.g. IRA, 401(k), 403(b)] or your life insurance policy.

• Leave a gift in your will.

• Make an outright gift of life insurance cash value from a policy that is no longer needed.

A financial advisor or attorney can guide donors in choosing one of these or other strategies to leave a legacy gift.

Legacy giving can be a way of “paying it forward.” By making a legacy gift, donors help to ensure that their values and passions live on. Legacy giving can also offer financial opportunities for donors or their heirs, depending on their circumstances and the types of gift.
