How healthy are your bones?

Osteoporosis is a sneaky disease. Your bones can weaken significantly before you even know you have it. Many people don’t realize they have osteoporosis until they have a fracture.

Because there may be no obvious symptoms of bone loss, it is important to talk with your doctor about whether you need a test to check on your bone health.

The most commonly used bone density test is the DEXA scan. It helps to diagnose bone loss and can be used to calculate your risk for having a fracture in the future. Bone density tests are recommended for women over age 65. Younger women and men of any age may also need a bone density test if they are at risk for osteoporosis.

Bone density testing is available at New Ulm Medical Center and can be ordered by your primary care doctor. For information on hours, providers, services and location, visit allinahealth.org/newulmclinic.
