Teenager, go home

To the editor: Re: letter written by Hilda M. Compton, Cazenovia Judge Philip Gillian, of Denver, recently gave some advice to the young people of his community in response to the cry of many teenagers, “What can we do…where can we go?” “Go home!” said the judge. “Hang the storm windows, paint the woodwork, rake the leaves, mow the lawn, wash the car, learn to cook, scrub the floor, repair the swing, build a boat, get a job, help the poor, study your lessons and when you are through and not too tired, read a good book. Your parents do not owe you a living, you owe the ...

Culture of death

To the editor: What is abortion? Abortion is expelling a life from it’s mother’s womb. Taking of a life is murder. The definition of murder in the Webster’s dictionary is the act of killing a human being by another human, which is, sinning against God’s creation. We should have all learned this by the time we reached the “Age of Reason!” In the Bible, Genesis chapter 1:27, it says “God created man in His image, male and female He created them.” God blessed them and said, “Increase and multiply and subdue the earth.” Chelsey Franta’s letter to the editor in The ...

Kudos to street department snow removal

To the editor: I am writing to recognize and thank the New Ulm Street Department. As you know, we have had some major snowfalls so far this winter and our street department has been doing an excellent job clearing snow and keeping streets clear. A photograph on the front page of The Journal (January 7-8, 2023) showed them removing snow from downtown streets. My wife and I moved into our home on Pfaender Drive last autumn. I was informed that this area gets a lot of snow and wind. That turned out to be the most eloquent masterpiece of understatement since Noah said, “It looks like ...

Does abortion promote peace?

To the editor: If we as a society continue to turn a blind eye to abortion and what it really is then we can never expect to see peace in our world. Advocates for abortion say that Pro-life views and legislation are extreme and cannot be allowed to put the safety and reproductive rights of a woman at risk. However, this is the very definition of an oxymoron. In order to protect one person’s rights we must kill another? This is a grave injustice in a world that demands justice at the drop of a hat. If we truly seek reproductive rights and we truly want autonomy over our own ...

A nation of immigrants

To the editor: Our Great Nation is indeed a nation of immigrants. Archeologists have determined that everyone, even the indigenous people living on the North American continent, are here because of immigration. We also used to be a nation of laws, but it seems we are stepping away from accepting our laws as written and choosing to believe the parts of the laws that are convenient to us or letting our emotions rule what we think should be right. The body of law governing the U.S. immigration policy is called the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). The INA allows the United States ...

City donations

To the editor: Government is in place to provide services in accord with the requirements of the U.S. Constitution. We pay our taxes to fund these services. Years ago it was the individuals, organizations, clubs, churches and foundations who raised funds to help people in need. The government stepped in to help out when the private charities couldn’t or wouldn’t provide those services. The best example of that is Social Security which was set up to assist those who could not financially survive on their own after a lifetime of working or being disabled. Private retirement funds ...
