New Ulm Police • Responded to a two-vehicle crash with minor injuries at 1:43 p.m. Monday on the 500 block of 7th North Street. A 2014 Chevy Impala driven by Sharon Elizabeth Fitterer, 74, New Ulm, was in front of a 2012 Ford Expedition driven by Jack Christopher Griebel, 17, New Ulm northbound on 7th North. Fitterer slowed to turn right into the Express Lane station and was struck in the rear by Griebel. Damage was moderate to both vehicles. The Ford was towed. Fitterer had minor injuries. Both drivers wore seat belts.

Judge OKs Zimmerman mental health evaluation

NEW ULM — After brief discussion Tuesday, a motion for a mental health evaluation for Randy Thomas Zimmerman was approved by Brown County District Court Judge Robert Docherty. Zimmerman remains in Brown County Jail custody with $10 million bail without conditions, $5 million with conditions. Last November, a grand jury formally indicted him with first-degree murder in the Nov. 2, 2025 deaths of Justin Reinarts and Tabitha Trescott in Hanska. NEW ULM — Brown County Commissioners turned down Sheriff Jason Seidl's request for additional deputy and deputy sergeant positions for the 2027 budget Tuesday by a 4-1 vote. “We’re understaffed compared to other comparable-sized counties,” Seidl told the commissioners. “When Sheriff Hoffmann took office (in 2007), he went to 24-hour coverage as part of his campaign promises without adding staff. NEW ULM – The candidate filing period to appear on the Nov. 3 general election ballot closed 5 p.m. Tuesday with no new candidates adding their names to local elections. In New Ulm, this mean Mayor Kathleen Backer and Ward 2 City Council Eric Warmka will run for re-election unopposed. Backer and Warmka were the only candidates to file for their respective offices before the filing deadline. New Ulm’s Ward 4 is also up for election in November.
