No candidates file NU Ward 4
Incumbents run unopposed in Brown County
NEW ULM – The candidate filing period to appear on the Nov. 3 general election ballot closed 5 p.m. Tuesday with no new candidates adding their names to local elections.
In New Ulm, this mean Mayor Kathleen Backer and Ward 2 City Council Eric Warmka will run for re-election unopposed. Backer and Warmka were the only candidates to file for their respective offices before the filing deadline.
New Ulm’s Ward 4 is also up for election in November. Ward 4 City Councilor Larry Mack was first elected to the council in 2014 and was re-elected in 2018 and 2022. Earlier this year, Mack announced he would not be seeking a fourth term on the council. However, as of the filing deadline, no other candidate has filed for Ward 4.
This means New Ulm Ward 4 council seat will be decided by write-in votes.
For Brown County offices, only incumbent candidates filed before the deadline. The three incumbent Brown County Commissioners; Anton “Tony” Berg in District 2, Brian Braun in District and Jeffrey Veerkamp in District 5 will all run unopposed in the November general election.
Other Brown County incumbents who refiled for election include County Recorder Mary Schreiner, Sheriff Jason S. Seidl and County Attorney Chuck Hanson. No other candidates have filed for Recorder, Sheriff or County Attorney.
The District 3 and District 5 Soil and Water Supervisor seats also had lone candidates file. Mark Portner filed for District 3 and Derek Nelson filed for District 5.
The June 3 candidate filing deadline was for elected offices where a primary is possible. For cities and school districts that do not hold primaries the candidate filing period is from July 14 until July 28, 2026 at 5 p.m.
