Area roundup: NUA takes conference championship

NUA wins BSC

MARSHALL — New Ulm Area finished as Big South Conference Champions after the Big South Conferene prep wrestling tournament on Saturday.

Ellie Dake finished as the champion for girls 155 after winning a 17-1 technical fall over St. James/Madelia’s Nevada Anderson, while Alex Portner was the champion at 127 with a 13-4 major dicision over Pipestone Area’s Mason Fruechte.

Elijah Rieser placed second at 145 for NUA, while Lane Ruch placed second at 189. Kane Johnson finished third at 133, Regan Johnson finished third at 114, and Tegan Kral placed third at 139. Chase Wilson also placed third at 107, while Candon Briggs placed fourth at 172. Braxton Kiecker placed fourth at 160, and Cohen Kiecker placed fifth at 121. Anna Pollard took fifth a 124 girls, and Isaiah Friese took sixth at heavyweight.

BOYS BASKETBALL

MVL 71, Nicollet 68

NICOLLET — Minnesota Valley Lutheran topped Nicollet 71-68 in a nonconference boys basketball game on Saturday.

Owen Birkholz led the Chargers with 23 points on four 3-pointers, while Luke Merseth had 17 points and eight rebounds. Peirson Brau added 14 points and eight rebounds for MVL.

Abe Madson led the Raiders with 18 points on six 3-pointers, while Henry Kennedy had 18 points. Henry Oscarson had 14 points, and Carson Kettner had 11 points and 13 rebounds.

MVL (8-3) plays at Tri-City United on Monday, while Nicollet (8-3) hosts Cedar Mountain on Saturday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

MVL 70, Nicollet 47

NICOLLET — Minnesota Valley Lutheran downed Nicollet 70-47 in a nonconference girls basketball game on Saturday.

Ziva Zahrt led the Chargers with 16 points and five rebounds, while Avery Freier had 11 points and four rebounds and Violet Hammer had 11 points.

Cheyenne Klockziem led the Raiders with 12 points and six rebounds, while Zoie Rengstorf had 11 points and five assists.

MVL (6-4) plays at Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton on Monday, while Nicollet (7-6) hosts Sibley East on Saturday.
