Area roundup: Knights, Mustangs earn 1st-round sweeps

PREP VOLLEYBALL

St. Mary’s 3, Nicollet 0

SLEEPY EYE — No. 4 Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s swept No. 13 Nicollet 25-9, 25-14, 25-18 in a Section 2A Volleyball Tournament match on Monday.

Morgan Mathiowetz had 13 kills and 14 digs for the Knights, while Audra Hoffmann had eight kills and seven digs. Ella Pollard had six kills, Natalie Fischer had 15 digs and Josie Helget had 32 set assists.

Kamryn Truebenbach and Cheyenne Klockziem each had five kills for Nicollet, while Payten Otto had nine digs and Zoie Rengstorf had eight digs, eight set assists and two aces. Lydia Martens added six assists.

St. Mary’s (20-7) plays No. 5 Martin County West at St. Peter High School at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Nicollet finishes the season with a 5-19 record.

BLHS 3, GFW 0

HECTOR — No. 1 Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart swept No. 16 Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 25-12, 25-8, 25-21 in a Section 2A Volleyball Tournament match on Monday.

Chloe Schultz led the Mustangs with 12 kills and three aces, while Lily Hubin had 11 kills, 14 set assists, five aces, two digs and two blocks. Lauren Hubin had 11 kills and eight digs, and EB Ovitt had 19 set assists and six digs. Kelsey Ulrich added 12 digs.

Ella Nachreiner had seven kills and three blocks for the Firebirds, while Kora Schwarzrock had seven digs. Natalie Ahlbrecht added eight set assists.

BLHS (25-2) plays No. 9 Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther at St. Peter High School on Thursday at 6 p.m. GFW ends its season with a 1-24 record.

Cedar Mountain 3, USC 1

MORGAN — No. 3 Cedar Mountain defeated No. 14 United South Central 25-20, 21-25, 25-10, 25-13 in a Section 2A Volleyball Tournament match on Monday.

Reagan Kleinschmidt led the Cougars with 21 kills, 14 set assists and eight digs, while Kendra Erickson had 18 kills, 23 set assists and 11 digs. Aubrey Steffl had 18 kills and eight digs, and Brynn Hoffbeck and Kendal Atkins each had 13 digs.

Cedar Mountain (21-7) plays No. 6 BOLD at Sibley East High School at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

BOLD 3, Sleepy Eye 0

OLIVIA — No. 6 BOLD swept No. 11 Sleepy Eye 25-23, 25-20, 25-21 in a Section 2A Volleyball Tournament match on Monday.

Sam Price led the way for Sleepy Eye with 13 kills, seven digs and two blocks, while Jaelynn Schauman had six kills, 16 digs, two blocks and two aces. Hannah Meyer had 15 set assists and nine digs, and Ava Kunkel had 14 set assists and six digs.

Sleepy Eye finishes the season with a 5-18 record.

Cleveland 3, Springfield 0

CLEVELAND — No. 2 Cleveland swept No. 15 Springfield 25-16, 25-6, 25-23 on Monday in the first round of the Section 2A Volleyball Tournament.

Olivia Simonson led the Tigers with five kills, three aces and nine digs, while Delayna Johnson had five kills and three blocks. Gabby Schenk added four kills for Springfield, while Sophie Mude had 21 assists and 10 digs and Kendall Krueger had 10 digs and three kills.

The Tomahawk-Valley Conference champion Clippers will take on New Ulm Cathedral in the next round in a 6 p.m. matchup at Sibley East High School on Thursday. Springfield ends its season with a 6-19 record.

Redwood Valley 3,

REDWOOD FALLS — Redwood Valley Swept New Ulm 25-16, 25-21, 25-15 in a Big South Conference volleyball match on Monday.

Brooklyn Lewis led the Eagles with 11 kills, 13 digs and an ace, while Lily Poehler had six kills, 15 digs and five set assists. Izzy Longtin had 20 set assists, three kills and 11 digs, and Lauren Schmiesing had 15 digs and four blocks.

New Ulm (8-17) plays at No. 1-seeded Marshall on Wednesday in the first round of the Section 2AAA Volleyball Tournament.
