Area roundup: Eagles avoid sweep but fall to Trojans

NEW ULM — New Ulm came back to avoid a sweep on Tuesday night but fell in the end to Worthington as the Trojans earned a 25-18, 25-21, 17-25, 25-16 win over the Eagles in a Big South Conference volleyball match.
Isabelle Longtin led the Eagles with six kills, 12 digs and two aces, while Lauren Schmiesing added six kills. Lily Poehler had 14 set assists for New Ulm, while Gracie Baker had eight digs and Brooklyn Lewis had two blocks.
New Ulm (3-5, 0-1) is at Fairmont on Thursday night for another Big South matchup.
St. Mary’s 3, Sleepy Eye 1
SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s topped Sleepy Eye in four sets of a nondivision volleyball match on Tuesday night, winning 25-16, 23-25, 25-21, 25-12 at St. Mary’s High School.
Morgan Mathiowetz led the way for the Knights with 18 kills and 19 digs, while Reese Hoffmann had 10 kills and Kailey Nelson had six kills. Josie Helget had 38 set assists, while Natalie Fischer had 19 digs.
For Sleepy Eye, Sam Price racked up 20 kills, eight digs and three blocks to lead the way, while Callie Evers had five kills. Macy Martinez added 13 digs and two aces for Sleepy Eye, while Hannah Meyer had 15 set assists and five digs and Ava Kunkel had 10 set assists.
St. Mary’s (3-0) is at Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday for a Tomahawk Division matchup, while Sleepy Eye (0-3) is at Cedar Mountain on Thursday for Tomahawk play. St. Mary’s and Sleepy Eye will rematch in a Tomahawk Division on Sept. 30 at Sleepy Eye High School.

NICOLLET — Cedar Mountain swept Nicollet on Tuesday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference crossover match, winning 25-15, 25-20, 25-14.
The Cougars were led in victory by Reagyn Kleinschmidt’s 13 kills, six assists and five digs, while Aubrey Steffl had eight kills and six digs and Kendra Erickson had five kills, 11 assists and six digs. Brynn Hoffbeck led the Cougars in digs with 13, while Kendal Atkins had six.
Madison Kettner led Nicollet with five kills and nine assists, while Kamryn Truebenbach had four aces, Chloe Kachelmeier had 10 digs and Megan Soost and Cheyenne Klockziem each had three blocks.
Nicollet (0-2) hosts Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Thursday night, while Cedar Mountain (3-0) hosts Sleepy Eye on Thursday.

WINTHROP — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop fell to Mankato Loyola on Tuesday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference crossover volleyball match 25-23, 25-23, 25-23.
Kora Schwarzrock led the Firebirds with 10 kills, while Ella Nachreiner had six kills and Chloe Henrichs had five kills. Natalie Ahlbrecht had 13 assists, while Maren Kemkes had 12 assists and Keyden Buboltz had three blocks.
GFW (0-2) is at Nicollet on Thursday.
USC 3, Madelia 0
MADELIA — United South Central defeated Madelia 25-23, 25-19, 25-21 on Tuesday in a nonconference volleyball match.
Madelia was led by Makayla Sorenson’s 11 kills and 10 digs, while Lauryn Grev had five kills and three aves and Grace Tatro had five kills. Emmy Johnson led Madelia in digs with 12, while Alicia Lugo had 16 set assists and Adrianne Missling had seven assists and two aces.
Madelia (0-4) is at a tournament in Sleepy Eye on Saturday.
