Sleepy Eye sweeps St. Mary’s in softball

SLEEPY EYE — It was a crosstown rivalry softball doubleheader between Sleepy Eye and Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Thursday at Praireview Park, with the Indians coming away with the sweep after winning 12-2 and 14-4, both in five innings.

Taylor Berkner was the winning pitcher in Game 1. She went five innings, gave up two earned runs on three hits, she walked five batters and she struck out five batters.

At the plate for Sleepy Eye, Paige Haala went 2 for 3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Brissa Hernandez went 3 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Callie Evers was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Berkner went 3 for 3 with three RBIs. Jaelynn Schauman went 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Jace Schauman went 1 for 2 with an RBI. Megan Sellner went 2 for 3 with two runs scored.

Natalie Zarn took the loss in Game 1 for the Knights. She pitched four innings, gave up 12 runs on 17 hits, walked four batters and struck out four.

At the plate for St. Mary’s, Taylor Mathiowetz went 1 for 2 with a run scored, while Josie Helget went 1 for 3 with a run scored for the Knights.

In Game 1, Sleepy Eye scored runs in four of the five innings. It had one run in the first, two in the third, five in the fourth and four in the fifth inning. It amassed 17 hits as well.

To start the game, Hernandez cracked a double to left field. She stole third and she scored on Berkner’s single to center field.

Haala drew a walk in the bottom of the third inning. Evers’ double brought Haala home. Evers scored later on Jace Schauman’s single to center field. Sleepy Eye led 3-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Seller reached on an infield hit. Haala doubled, then Hernandez got another double, which brought Sellner and Haala home for a 5-0 lead. Evers tripled, which scored Hernandez. Evers scored as Berkner reached on an infield hit. Courtesy runner Lexi Hoffman scored the eighth run for Sleepy Eye.

The Knights avoided a shutout in the top of the fifth when they scored two runs. Both came as the result of quick movements on the base paths. Josie Helget reached base and she broke the shutout with St. Mary’s first run. Taylor Mathiowetz walked and later scored on a sacrifice out.

Sleepy Eye kept the batting order moving in the top of the fifth inning. Jaelynn Schauman drew a leadoff walk. She moved to second base on Kenley Jensen’s infield single. Sellner’s bunt single put Jaelynn Schauman on third, then Haala’s hit scored Jaelynn Schauman. Jensen scored later on a wild pitch. Sellner scored on Evers’ single. Haala scored Sleepy Eye’s final run when Kaylie Fulmer singled.

Berkner pitched Game 2 for the Indians as well, striking out five while allowing four runs on three hits and five walks. At the plate for Sleepy Eye, Berkner was 3 for 3 with four RBIs and a double ,while Jace Schauman was 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs. Evers was 2 for 4 with four RBIs, a double and two runs scored, while Jaelynn Schauman was 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Haala added a hit, an RBI and three runs scored, while Jensen had a hit and two RBIs.

Mathiowetz took the loss for St. Mary’s, allowing 14 runs on 14 hits and five walks while striking out four. At the plate, Olivia Schieffert had a hit and two RBIs, while Eva Schweiss had a hit, an RBI and a run scored. Helget added a hit and a run scored.

Sleepy Eye (12-4, 10-3) hosts Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop and Red Rock Central in a split doubleheader on Monday. St. Mary’s (2-12, 2-8) will host Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Monday.
