NEW ULM — By the time New Ulm’s Tyshun Brown brought Eagles fans to their feet with a 90-yard kick-off return for a touchdown, Marshall had already built up a 54-0 lead, and the Tigers added one more touchdown in a 60-7 win over New Ulm Wednesday night in a South District, Central-Red Subdisrict game at New Ulm High School.

Gaven Schaefer scored three touchdowns for the Tigers with Mason Eckhoff scoring twice.

Levi Maeyaert add a touchdown pass to Jack Meier.

Josh Kraft had a 53-yard interception return for a touchdown with Mason O’Donnell scoring on a a 4-yard run and Carter Manther adding a 2-yard scoring run.

All in all, it was a dominating performance from the Tigers.

“Marshall is obviously the best team in our section for a reason,” New Ulm coach Derek Lieser said. “They do a lot of things well — they are fast and physical. And for us on a short week [of practice] it compounds the issue of preparing for them. We were not good enough in any phase of the game. We turned the ball over, gave up big plays. We did not show up ready to play tonight.”

Marshall scored on their first four possessions of the game for a 27-0 lead. A 2-yard run from Eckhoff, a 6-yard run from Schaefer, an 18-yard scoring strike from Maeyaert to Meier and a second Eckhoff run of 2 yards had Marshall in cruise control.

Kraft’s 53-yard pick-6 made it 33-0 at halftime.

A 1-yard run from Schaefer and a 4-yard run from O’Donnell upped the lead to 47-0. Manther’s run made it 54-0 before Johnson got the Eagles on the board with a 90-yard kickoff return.

“Tyshun is a kid that we have tried to implement into what we do just because we know that he is explosive,” Lieser said. “He is a quick-twitch guy, and if he sees a crease, he can hit it.”

New Ulm now awaits Thursday’s seedings with hopes of a four-seed and a home playoff game.

“I would not be upset if we got that four seed and hosted St. Peter [on Tuesday] for the playoffs.”
