Weekend area roundup: Luverne eliminates New Ulm with OT win

GIRLS HOCKEY

Luverne 3, New Ulm 2 (OT)

LUVERNE — Payton Behr’s overtime goal lifted Luverne to a 3-2 win over New Ulm on Saturday in the Section 3A girls hockey playoffs.

The Eagles end their season with a 15-11-1 record.

Anika Boil got Luverne on the board first at 2:58 of the first period before Afton Hulke’s power-play goal at 8:03 of the first on assists from Michelle Smith and Mya Hornick tied it up.

After a scoreless second period, Rylee Kurtz scored on a power-play goal to put Luverne up 2-1 at 2:27 of the third. Smith then scored a power-play goal of her own on assists from Lilly Kral and Hulke at 13:32 of the third to tie it at 2-all and eventually force overtime.

Ava Brennan stopped 32 shots in net for the Eagles, while Luverne goalie Emma Saarloos had 18 saves.

BOYS BASKETBALL

MVL 100, TCU 76

MONTGOMERY — Minnesota Valley Lutheran hit the century mark on Saturday in a 100-76 nonconference boys basketball win over Tri-City United.

Ben Pearson led the way for the Chargers with 33 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, while Kyler Flunker had 24 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Will Kaesermann added 11 points for MVL, while Maverick Johnson had 9 points and five rebounds and Aaron Black had 8 points and seven rebounds.

TCU was led by Luke Holicky’s 30 points.

MVL (17-5) hosts Sleepy Eye in a big Tomahawk Conference matchup on Tuesday night.

BOYS HOCKEY

New Ulm 5, Albert Lea 2

ALBERT LEA — New Ulm downed Albert Lea 5-2 on Saturday in a nonconference boys hockey game.

Kaden Larson led New Ulm with a hat trick, while Bryer Lang and Brody Wenner each scored a goal. Austin Uecker, Brecken Neuman, Ian Brudelie and Bryer Hoffmann each had an assist for New Ulm.

New Ulm (19-4) is at Hopkins on Tuesday.

PREP WRESTLING

Dake finishes 3rd at girls section meet

REDWOOD FALLS — New Ulm’s Ellie Dake and Wabasso’s Macy Rohlik and Camryn Irlbeck placed in the Section 1 and 3 individual girls wrestling tournament on Saturday.

Dake placed third at 148, winning by fall over Redwood Valley’s Addison Schmidt in 45 seconds. Rohlik won by fall over La Crescent-Hokah’s Sterling Toleson in 2:32 to place fifth at 130, and Irlbeck placed eighth at 142 after Jolie Pettit of Hastings won by decision over Irlbeck in the seventh-place match.
