Eagles can’t hold off Cougars in 6-1 loss

MANKATO – New Ulm was out-shot 49-9 as they fell to Mankato East 6-1 in a nonconference girls hockey game Tuesday at All Seasons Arena in Mankato.
Afton Hulke scored the Eagles’ lone goal, assisted by Madalynn Olson. Ava Brennan had 43 saves.
After East opened the scoring with a goal by Laina Peterson, Hulke scored her goal at 7:50 of the first period to tie the game at one. East’s Jessica Eykyn scored again at 12:43 in the first to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead after one.
New Ulm had some offensive pressure early in the second period but failed to convert. The Eagles were assessed with two penalties later in the period, but the penalty kill did its job well, only allowing three shots between the two penalties in the second.
Penalty issues continued in the third for New Ulm, with three penalties being called on the Eagles in the period, including a five-minute penalty. Eykyn scored again at 3:43 in the third period, and Brielle Newton followed that up with East’s fourth goal at 4:24.
East scored twice on the major penalty, both by Sophie Steindl to finish the game up 6-1.
New Ulm (1-2) hosts Worthington at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
